Job Summary:
The Substitute School Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, as well as to school-related activities, in the absence of regular drivers. This position ensures the safety and well-being of all passengers and adheres to all federal, state, and local traffic laws and school district policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate a school bus along assigned routes and schedules when regular drivers are unavailable.
- Pick up and drop off students at designated locations safely and on time.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus to ensure proper functioning and compliance with safety standards.
- Maintain proper student discipline on the bus and report incidents as required.
- Follow all traffic laws, safety regulations, and district transportation policies.
- Report mechanical issues, accidents, or safety hazards immediately to the Transportation Supervisor.
- Keep the interior of the bus clean and orderly.
- Assist students with disabilities or special needs in boarding and exiting the bus as required.
- Maintain accurate records as needed (e.g., trip logs, mileage, fuel usage).
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements as required by state law. Training provided to obtain CDL.
- Must pass a criminal background check, drug/alcohol screening, and meet all state and federal DOT requirements.
- Ability to maintain order and ensure student safety.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for long periods and operate foot and hand controls.
- Ability to bend, stoop, climb, and assist students as needed
Work Schedule:
- On-call, as needed to cover absences, field trips, and special routes.
- Flexible availability during early mornings and afternoons.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to various weather conditions.
- Frequent contact with students, parents, and staff.
