Job Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing advanced accounting, financial reporting, and analysis to ensure the integrity of financial information and compliance with governmental accounting standards. This role supports the Finance Director in managing the Pueblo West Metropolitan District’s financial operations, including budget preparation, audit support, capital project tracking, and financial system management.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and subsidiary ledgers.
  • Lead or assist in the year-end close process and preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
  • Support the District’s annual audit process; work closely with external auditors to provide required documentation and explanations.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the District’s annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and oversee proper capitalization and depreciation schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB, and applicable state and local financial regulations.
  • Prepare and submit required state and federal reports, including grant-related financials.
  • Review and monitor financial transactions for accuracy and compliance with District policies.
  • Provide financial analysis and support to departments for budget and planning purposes.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to accounting procedures, internal controls, and financial reporting systems.
  • Mentor and support junior finance staff in their professional development.
  • Be advocates promoting health and safety in the workplace.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Solid understanding of governmental accounting principles (GASB), fund accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency with accounting software systems (e.g., Blackbaud or other ERP systems).
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling and pivot tables.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • High attention to detail and integrity in financial data handling.
  • Utilize positive and professional communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively practice conflict management to resolve interpersonal conflict.
  • Ability to identify and recommend solutions to problems in a timely manner.
Qualifications:

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.)

 

Education/Certifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in accounting required.
  • CPA certification is desirable but not required.

 

Minimum Experience Required

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible accounting experience; government accounting experience highly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

 

Licenses

  • Must have and maintain a valid Colorado class “R” driver’s license.

 

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment.
  • Occasional attendance at evening meetings or special events may be required.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods and operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Work is subject to frequent interruptions and recurring deadlines.
  • The employee is required to occasionally work beyond normal scheduled hours.
