Description of Job
The Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) position is a General Maintenance Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) in a correctional facility in Crowley County, CO. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; training and overseeing an inmate work crew in general building trades, grounds maintenance, and janitorial operations and ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant completion of assigned tasks. This position promotes the CDOC Mission and Vision with integrity and commitment.
Safety and Security - position maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides inmates in the proper use of controlled items, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches and monitoring workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas; position performs inmate counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment.
Operations - position ensures the safe, efficient, compliant and cost effective operations of building and grounds construction, janitorial operations, repair or maintenance.
The General Maintenance Supervisor coordinates with other projects, supervisors and managers in order to facilitate the most economical use of resources and assists other physical plant staff with duties as assigned. With prior purchase/approval and in accordance with fiscal rules and policies, position maintains adequate inventory of supplies and materials for daily and emergent needs; monitors inventory levels and implements procedures for efficient use and elimination of theft, waste, and loss.
Supervision - provides supervision of assigned inmate work crew; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission and vision. Trains and instructs staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures to ensure efficient, safe and effective completion of assigned tasks; stresses safe construction practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff and inmates; exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior.
Participates in inmate hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on crews and training needs; tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances; inspects work and performs inmate evaluations; reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry.
Position may be required to supervise additional inmate crews in the absence of other supervisors.
This position is subject to the following:
Facility call back, working additional hours or shifts to maintain security and operations, working outside during inclement weather, working in close proximity to industrial equipment and in high, tight, and confined spaces.

Minimum Qualifications:
Four (4) years of employment experience in building/equipment maintenance or a combination of building and grounds maintenance.
Building/Equipment Maintenance - includes planning, estimating, and performing a variety of "hands on" trades such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, machinery/equipment repair, and/or electrical on residential, commercial, or agricultural structures.
Grounds Maintenance - includes planning, installation, and/or maintenance of automated irrigation systems, comprehensive lawn care, and a variety of other exterior work such as concrete work, asphalt patching, fence building, and/or snow removal.
OR
Applicant may meet the four (4) year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows:
A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with correctional experience. (If you are using correctional experience, be sure to include details in the 'Work Experience' section of the application)
Correctional Experience - must be security related duties where primary responsibilities included detaining, controlling movement and escorting inmates in a prison facility; conducting counts and searches while monitoring inmate assignments and movement throughout the day. Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or degree through an accredited, non- correspondence vocational or trade school that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those learned through the required experience may substitute for experience on a year for year basis. - Possess a valid driver’s license. Drivers must maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver license, obey traffic laws, and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle. State drivers are expected to maintain a safe driving record consistent with Colorado Division of Human Resources Universal Policy Driving Standards. Eligibility to drive a State-owned vehicle, includes holding a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment or residency change and meeting specific driving record criteria. Serious traffic violations, including DUIs or reckless driving, can disqualify drivers for up to seven years. All State Vehicles are monitored by telematics for safe operation and employees have no reasonable expectation of privacy while using an agency State Fleet vehicle.
- Although a valid driver's license is not required for this position, transportation to and from the facility is mandatory to ensure entry through secured checkpoints. Facilities maintain continuous 24/7 security control, and authorized vehicle access is required for entry into the complex.
