PREFERENCES

PNM is looking for a Transmission Lines Engineer that will perform complex engineering activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient, and economic manner.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities Or Preferences

  • Under general supervision, the engineer is responsible for the following:
  • Design transmission routes and lines including structure types, configurations, and profile, as well as review design packages for accuracy
  • Establish and apply requirements and standards for new or existing transmission lines and modifications/extensions and for associated structures and hardware equipment to be used within PNM transmission lines
  • Experience resolving emergent issues on transmission line construction projects and/or failures at existing locations and within existing equipment within the company and or with neighboring entities
  • Performing lightning studies and experience interpreting or peer reviewing lightning study results
  • Ability to create bill of materials and equipment lists for transmission line construction projects
  • Work with original equipment manufacturers and vendors to identify offerings and relate them to PNM project needs
  • Calculate facilities ratings based on material properties, configurations, and ambient condition(s)
  • Identify required outages and clearance points for transmission line projects for both greenfield and brownfield projects coordinated with the Project Management and Control Center departments
  • Perform field inspections and verifications for projects and delivered material to ensure adherence to design standards and specifications
  • Ensure compliance with utility standards, safety regulations, and state/federal rules (IEEE, NESC, FERC/NERC) as applicable
  • Provide technical support and direction to field personnel and contractors, and training to less experienced staff, as needed
  • Communicate engineering ideas, recommendations and evaluations to diverse internal and external audiences
  • Apply engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards and new technology solutions
  • Perform all work in a safe and timely manner.

Competencies:

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, organization, and attention to detail
  • PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, MFAD, and SAG10 software and estimating experience preferred
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply national, state and local codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ACI, AISC, ASME, NACE, etc.)
  • Ability to translate electrical theory and physics to utility application for improving system reliability
  • Ability to make informed repair decisions following company protocols
  • Comfortable working in and around high voltage (up to 345kV) electrical facilities and equipment
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, self-motivation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team with various departments and levels of personnel

Summary:

Under direct supervision, performs assignments designed to develop engineering work knowledge and abilities through the application of standard techniques, practices and procedures.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities:

Provides entry-level engineering support for projects that are small and somewhat repetitive in nature

Conducts small or repetitive studies or participates in larger studies where project performance, cost, and scheduling are the key factors of evaluation

Provides basic engineering support to operational areas

Communicates engineering ideas, recommendations and evaluations

Represents the Company in technical matters that are fundamental in nature

Provides entry-level technical support to and interacts with other associates

Uses the Company and industry standards to ensure safety and consistency of engineering results

Provides occasional technical direction and/or activity supervision to contractors and lower-level Company personnel

Competencies:

Knowledge and ability to apply the appropriate basic and well-established principles, practices and regulations in the incumbents respective discipline

Ability to read, interpret and apply national, state and local codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ACI, AISC, etc.)

Demonstrated good leadership skills, self-motivation, and good interpersonal skills

Ability to translate electrical theory and physics to utility application for improving system reliability

Demonstrated confidence working in and around high voltage (up to 345kV) electrical facilities. and equipment

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors Degree in engineering from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) and one to three years related experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must possess current, legally valid driver¿s license and meet the Company¿s driving record requirements.

Communication Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, write speeches, and presentations

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, and managers of the organization

Computer Skills:

In-depth knowledge of personal computers including demonstrated proficiency with electrical engineering design programs, such as Autocad

Working knowledge of operating systems, word processing, database, and spreadsheet software

Analysis And Problem-solving Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out complex instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with complex problems involving several concrete variables in complicated situations.

Physical Demands:

This position requires periods of frequent sitting, standing, walking, and exposure to outside elements, lifting (50 pounds or under), crouching, bending, climbing and working at various heights.

Protective equipment required: Hard-hat, safety glasses and hearing protection.

Work Environment:

Time will be divided between office and field, with a majority of time in the office.

Work will be around high voltage electricity, computers, office equipment, and construction equipment.

Applies routine engineering techniques, practices, and procedures in support of operational areas.

Communicates engineering ideas, recommendations, and evaluations effectively to engineering and non-engineering individuals and groups.

Represents the Company in intermediate engineering matters.

Interacts with and provides technical support consistent with the application of well-established standards to other associates.

Participates in the formulation of Company and industry standards.

Provides technical direction and/or activity supervision to contractors and Company personnel as required by specific assignments/projects.

Competencies:

Knowledge of and ability to apply standard engineering principles, practices and regulations, and economic and decision analysis principles to area problems including, but not limited to, generation, transmission, distribution, fuels, system planning, financial and regulatory issues, asset utilization, and environmental controls and regulations.

Must possess current, legally valid driver¿s license and meet the Company¿s driving record requirements.

Represents the company¿s interests in engineering matters that may be varied and complex in nature

Interacts with and provides broad knowledge technical support to other associates

Applies engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards

Provides technical direction and/or activity supervision to contractors and company personnel on a regular, on-going basis

Represents the companys interests in advanced engineering matters

Identifies and resolves broad technical and/or organizational issues affecting the company goals and objectives

Provides advanced technical support as a staff advisor or consultant to, and interacts with other associates

Applies extensive engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards

Provides advanced and often highly innovative technical direction and/or activity supervision to contractors and company personnel on an as-needed basis

Functions as a lead for staff engineers, professionals, and technicians and as appropriate, provides training
