What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Engagement & Organizing Associate position at Public Private Strategies?
Public Private Strategies (PPS) is seeking a dynamic, relational, and self-starting individual to join our team as a Business Engagement & Organizing Associate. This role cultivates relationships with small business leaders, strengthens organizing infrastructure, and expands our national network of partners and storytellers for programs including Small Business for America’s Future (SBAF) and other initiatives.
This position works closely with the Managing Director overseeing SBAF and cross-initiative organizing, as well as communications, policy, and project leads across the organization. The ideal candidate brings strong organizing instincts, comfort managing multiple priorities, and an interest in helping build systems that support long-term engagement and impact.
- Conduct regular outreach to small business owners and leaders to grow and sustain PPS’s engagement network across SBAF and aligned initiatives.
- Recruit, cultivate, and retain small business storytellers to support education, outreach, and engagement efforts.
- Support leadership development among engaged business leaders, including participation in councils, briefings, and convenings.
- Develop and implement targeted end to end outreach plans in coordination with project leads, including identifying priority audiences and engagement goals, tracking and managing reporting metrics, and producing project materials.
- Manage and maintain trusted relationships with business leaders across the small business ecosystem, ensuring their perspectives are reflected across PPS initiatives.
- Support outreach to organizational partners such as associations, chambers, coalitions, and aligned nonprofits to expand reach across issue areas.
- Coordinate across PPS teams and initiatives to conduct partner engagement tied to specific initiatives, campaigns, or convenings.
- Maintain shared tracking of partners and outreach activity to support alignment and follow-through.
- Assist with spokesperson preparation and coordination in partnership with the communications team, including prep calls, scheduling, and materials.
- Provide feedback and manage sharing draft versions of small business quotes, statements, testimonials, or written stories for use across PPS initiatives in coordination with the spokesperson and communications team.
- Support virtual and in-person events, including roundtables, briefings, and larger convenings.
- Build invite lists, manage RSVPs, source speakers, and support follow-up communications.
- Support light project management functions, including tracking outreach progress, timelines, and follow-ups.
- Enter and maintain accurate records of outreach, relationships, and engagement in PPS databases (EveryAction or similar CRM).
- Tag and document outreach activity to support reporting, communications, and internal planning.
- Provide periodic summaries and readouts to leadership on engagement trends, opportunities, and challenges.
- Strong ability to build authentic relationships and listen to and elevate people’s stories.
- 2–4 years of experience in organizing, outreach, community engagement, or issue-based campaigns.
- Experience identifying and supporting storytellers or working directly with small business owners or community leaders.
- Familiarity with EveryAction, VAN, or similar CRM systems preferred.
- High energy individual who is comfortable with fast-paced environment and multiple projects
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities across initiatives.
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Comfort working collaboratively across teams and adapting to shifting priorities.
- Experience or interest in public policy, advocacy, small business engagement, or coalition-based work.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and related tools.
