Job Summary:
The Shear Welder is responsible for operating shear welding equipment and material handling systems to prepare steel for mill production, ensuring correct material selection, accurate measurements, and quality standards are met. This role supports mill operations through safe equipment operation, changeover assistance, inspections, and routine maintenance while following all safety and quality procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reads mill order and steel inventory printouts to find correct steel.
- Retrieves steel, directs crane operator and determines amounts of steel needed to fill the order.
- Takes and records rockwell readings as needed
- Operates shear welder, gantry crane and looper tower safely.
- Assist in changeovers
- Checks strip width and gauge
- Visually inspects strip for defects
- Helps operator make changeovers and learns setups to the best of his/her ability
- Fills gear boxes with oil and greases bearings as directed by mill operator.
- Cleans all areas of the plant when not directed by supervisor to do anything else.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as directed

Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to reason through problems involving adjustments to equipment
- Must have an average background in math/calculate steel needed to fill order
- Must know how to run the shear welder as well as manual welding
- Must know how to set gaps between strip when welding
- Must know how to position edge burrs on coils when placing steel on uncoiler
- Must be able to lift, push an/or pull a maximum of 50 pounds. Required to walk, stand, climb for approximately 85% of an 8 hour working period. Must be able to bend, squat, and reach without restrictions.

Work Environment:
Must be able to tolerate hot conditions in summer months. In addition, must be able to withstand heat from welder when making end welds.
