About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Histology Supervisor to lead our nightshift histology operations. This is a hands-on supervisory role that combines technical benchwork with team leadership, quality assurance, and workflow management. The ideal candidate will be a certified histotechnologist with strong leadership skills and a passion for laboratory excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Workflow Oversight
- Manage nightly histology workflow to ensure timely and accurate case processing.
- Distribute workload efficiently and resolve technical/logistical issues.
Technical Benchwork
- Perform routine histology tasks: grossing, embedding, microtomy, H&E and special staining.
- Troubleshoot equipment and reagent issues.
Staff Supervision
- Supervise nightshift histotechnologists and lab aides.
- Handle scheduling, timekeeping, and staffing adjustments.
Training & Competency
- Oversee onboarding and training of new staff.
- Maintain documentation of competencies and identify skill gaps.
Quality Assurance
- Monitor QC procedures and ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, and internal standards.
- Support audits and inspection readiness.
Performance Management
- Conduct evaluations, provide feedback, and support development plans.
- Participate in disciplinary actions as needed.
Communication & Liaison
- Serve as the primary contact between nightshift staff and lab leadership.
- Relay updates and attend management meetings.
Process Improvement
- Identify inefficiencies and propose workflow enhancements.
- Support strategic lab initiatives.
SOP Compliance
- Ensure adherence to SOPs and assist in updates and revisions.
Inventory Oversight
- Monitor supply usage and coordinate with inventory management to prevent disruptions.
Qualifications:
Education
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology, Biological Sciences, or related field.
Certification
- HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) required.
Experience
- 3–5 years of hands-on histology experience.
- Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Skills
- Strong understanding of histology workflows and lab practices.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Proficient in troubleshooting and familiar with CAP, CLIA, OSHA standards.
- Comfortable with LIS and basic computer systems.
Working Conditions
- Laboratory setting with exposure to biological specimens and chemicals.
- Requires standing for long periods and manual dexterity.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally.
- Fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
