Provo City is seeking a Water Sources Plant Operations Supervisor to oversee drinking water treatment plant operations for the municipality. This position supervises and participates in the activities of the work unit including operating process equipment, monitoring controls, and recording readings. What is the compensation package?

Pay: $36.55 - $54.26 per hour (depending on experience)

What are the main duties? (For the full list of duties,

  • Serve as the Direct Responsible Charge (DRC) for plant operations under Utah Code and ensure work is completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with established regulations, guidelines, and standards.

  • Supervise and participate in daily plant operations, including operating process equipment, monitoring controls, recording readings, inspecting facilities, and performing lower-level operator duties when needed.

  • Monitor plant conditions, identify changes from normal operations, determine causes, and direct corrective action to resolve operational issues.

  • Support drinking water sampling and testing, track chemical use and filtration needs, and make process control calculations and adjustments to maintain proper chemical dosages.

  • Plan, assign, schedule, prioritize, and review the work of operators, relief operators, and other assigned employees; provide technical guidance and ensure work meets applicable rules and regulations.

  • Assist with employee training, certification, performance reviews, personnel concerns, discipline or recognition, and staffing decisions, including hiring and separation of drinking water treatment plant staff.

  • Prioritize plant repairs and improvements, implement preventive maintenance programs, and monitor contracted work related to plant upgrades and modifications.

  • Maintain inventory, initiate requisitions, and track purchase orders, equipment, supplies, and bidding processes.

  • Prepare and maintain records and reports, including reports for state agencies, and train operators on recordkeeping procedures and plant functions.

  • Support public and organizational needs by guiding plant tours, assisting other staff as needed, acting as Water Sources Manager during absences, and performing related duties as assigned.

What are the minimum requirements?

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Six (6) years of qualified water treatment plant operator experience, three (3) years of which must have been at a level equal to a certified Utah Grade IV Operator.

  • A valid, lawful Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with H-Hazmat endorsement is required.

  • Utah Distribution Grade IV Water Operator Certification-Unrestricted.

  • Utah Treatment Grade IV Water Operator Certification-Unrestricted.

(Up to 2 years of additional education may be substituted for an equal amount of general operator experience. Relevant and specialized operator training may be substituted for education requirement, where 25 Continuing Education Units is equivalent to 1 year of education.)

What is the selection process?

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on August 13, 2026. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
