Provo City is seeking a full-time Drinking Water Plant Operator (Apprentice – level III) to provide skilled maintenance work operating and maintaining the City drinking water treatment plant. This position involves operating and maintaining wells, pumping stations, and other water infrastructure to ensure safe drinking water for Provo City residents. What is the compensation package?

Pay: (G25 - G28) $24.74 -$42.51 per hour (depending on experience)

What are the main duties?

  • Assist with plant operations and processes involving operating and maintaining wells, pumping stations, meter stations, and other water infrastructure, preliminary treatment (coagulation), filtration, disinfection, pH, storage, and distribution.

  • Monitor and take readings on varied outputs (gauges, meters, and controls) associated with maintaining the UPDES permit.

  • Monitor SCADA system.

  • Conduct basic sampling, maintain raw data records, and assist with recordkeeping and process control reports.

  • Assist lab in running basic tests and general cleaning procedures.

  • Perform preventative maintenance, assist with repairs, and perform general maintenance and calibration of equipment, grounds, and buildings.

  • Assist the public and others by responding to emergency calls and guiding plant tours.

  • Under general supervision, independently perform lower-level operator duties.

  • Observe processes, flows, water characteristics, and discharges and identify abnormal conditions.

  • Resolve basic operation issues.

  • Assist others as needed and perform other related duties as required.

Higher level operators are distinguished by increased responsibilities and reduced supervision.

What are the minimum requirements?

At all Levels

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Apprentice

  • One (1) year of experience in general construction, maintenance, semi-skilled craft or trade, or work that demonstrates mechanical aptitude.

  • A valid, lawful Driver License.

  • A valid, lawful Commercial Driver License (CDL) is required within 3 months of hire.

Level I

  • One (1) year of professional water/wastewater operator experience.

  • A valid, lawful Commercial Driver License (CDL).

  • A Utah Treatment Grade I (T1) Water Operator Certification.

Level II

  • Two (2) years of professional water/wastewater operator experience OR Utah Treatment Grade I (T1) Water Operator certificate and 4 years of water/wastewater operator experience with Division Director approval.

  • A valid, lawful Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL).

  • Utah Treatment Grade II (T2) Water Operator Certification.

Level III

  • Three (3) years of professional water/wastewater operator experience OR Utah Treatment Grade II (T2) Water Operator certificate and 6 years of water/wastewater operator experience with Division Director approval.

  • A valid, lawful Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL).

  • Utah Treatment Grade III (T3) Water Operator Certification.

What is the selection process?

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held seven (7) days after initial posting. Job solicitation may be closed at that time. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
