Purpose:To provide unskilled and diversified duties in connection with the general maintenance and routine building custodial and janitorial tasks. Maintains facilities, buildings and surrounding grounds in a clean and neat conditionEssential Tasks of the Position:Performs routine custodial, maintenance and grounds keeping tasksCleans and polishes floors located in storerooms, corridors, elevators, stairwells, lavatories and other areas by sweeping, dry mopping, scrubbing, waxing and polishing, using a variety of hand implements and equipment including brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers and floor buffersMaintains rest rooms by sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, disinfecting and deodorizing lavatories, urinals, toilet bowl, sinks, mirrors and fountainsMaintains grounds including pruning shrubs and trees, reseeding lawns, spraying insecticide and removing snow and icePerforms minor buildings/grounds maintenance, including inserting window panes, oiling or lubricating hinges and adjusting various pieces of cleaning equipmentPerforms routine custodial tasks including emptying waste baskets, washing windows, emptying trash compactors, vacuuming rugs and carpets, stripping wax, assisting tenants in moving furniture and similar tasksApplies appropriate solvents and solutions including detergents, soaps, scouring powders, waxes and polishesPerforms a number of routine security functions including checking and securing designated offices and buildings at specific times of the day/nightPerforms general cleaning, custodial and routine upkeep of properties, grounds and common areas as assignedAssumes responsibility for the safe, sanitary and attractive maintenance of grounds, common areas within assigned locationsPerforms custodial tasks throughout agency properties, common areas (community rooms), offices and maintenance shopsResponds to work orders issued for minor repairs and general upkeep of assigned areasAccounts for basic supplies, materials, tools and equipment stored at areas of assignmentOperates agency vehicles (up to 2 ton capacity), as assignedSecondary Tasks of the Position:Other duties as assignedPosition Requirements and Qualifications:Education LevelAbility to understand English language to an acceptable level for productivity standards, requiredHigh school diploma or GED, preferredExperience in Related FieldNo prior experience, required1-2 years’ experience in maintenance or construction, preferredPrior experience working in public housing setting, preferredKnowledge, skills, abilities, licenses and certificationsAbility to maintain confidentiality in all assignments as mandatedAbility to work harmoniously with other agency personnelAbility to relate to and interact with elderly/disabled and family residents in low and moderate income housing settingsAbility to be flexible and perform work under time pressureAbility and willingness to learn appropriate skills, accept responsibility and to complete assignments, as directedWorking knowledge of methods and practices used in janitorial work and maintenance of buildingsWorking knowledge of proper use of a variety of special cleaning and sanitizing solutions and solventsWorking knowledge of English languageAbility to read signs and follow verbal and written instructionsAbility to move heavy furniture, supplies and equipmentAbility to use common cleaning tools and equipmentAbility to operate lawn and snow equipmentRI Driver’s License, preferred
