What are the responsibilities and job description for the FACILITY MAINTENANCE I position at Prospect Heights Park District?
SUMMARY:
The Facility Maintenance I position is responsible for opening and closing the Recreation Center, determining daily tasks based on the schedule, and maintaining the cleanliness of various Facility areas (vacuuming, mopping, stripping, waxing floors, and shampooing carpets. Performs minor repairs such as electrical work, plumbing, ceiling tile replacement, and painting. This is a part-time, seasonal non-exempt hourly position that may include working evenings, weekends, and holidays.
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:
The Facility Maintenance I position will report directly to the Superintendent of Parks & Facilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for opening and closing the Recreation Center Facility according to schedule.
- Reviews the facility schedule to determine and prioritize daily task assignments.
- Cleans all facility entrances, washrooms, offices, and meeting rooms.
- Cleans locker rooms, concessions areas, and gymnasium.
- Vacuums all carpeted areas and cleans windows.
- Mops floors in washrooms, locker rooms, and meeting rooms.
- Monitors maintenance and cleanliness of the front and back entrances of the building.
- Logs mechanical readings for Facility equipment and systems.
- Replaces ceiling tiles and other minor facility components.
- Maintains an accurate inventory of maintenance supplies and ensures timely restocking.
- Assists with special events (set up and take down)
- Effectively and safely operates all necessary equipment.
- Wear personal protective equipment for job functions when needed.
- Performs all job tasks in compliance with the District's safety program rules and guidelines, ensuring a safe working environment.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Attend staff and in-service training meetings
- Completes minor electrical & plumbing repairs.
- Strips and waxes floors as required.
- Shampoos carpets to maintain cleanliness and appearance.
- Paint walls, doors, window frames, and pool surfaces as needed for upkeep and aesthetics.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
The Facility Maintenance I position may have possible stress while working irregular and overtime hours during peak times and working in public view. Ability to work within a diverse population and varied personalities.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Capable of walking long distances (over 800 yards) and standing for extended periods (2-3 hours), as required by job tasks. Involves periods of stooping, climbing, reaching, and working on and hydraulic lift, ladders, requiring good balance, coordination, and flexibility.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
The Facility Maintenance I position may be exposed to weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, snow, rain and ice. The Facility Maintenance I position will also be exposed to various chemicals (i.e., pool chemicals, cleaning agents, and oil fuels).
COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS:
Responsible, with good communication skills, able to take directions and handle all tasks and equipment safely and with sound judgment.
PAY RATE:
Starting at $15/hr
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum high school graduate.
- One-year previous facility custodial experience
- Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written directions with little or no direct supervision.
- Valid Illinois driver’s license with knowledge of manual transmission required.
- Driver of road vehicles must be at least 18 years of age
- Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug test and hearing test.
- CPR/AED Certification within 30 days of hire date
