Test Engineer – Telecommunications Equipment

Position Summary
Qobalt is seeking an experienced Test Engineer to support the evaluation, upgrade, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of remanufactured telecommunications equipment.
The Test Engineer will research, develop, implement, and document test procedures; diagnose technical failures; operate specialized test equipment; and help ensure telecommunications products meet established performance requirements.
This is an on-site, hands-on engineering role requiring strong telecommunications knowledge, analytical problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with technical and operational teams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Research, develop, implement, and document test procedures for telecommunications equipment.
- Evaluate, test, upgrade, troubleshoot, and support the repair of remanufactured telecommunications products.
- Diagnose equipment failures and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Perform functional, electrical, optical, and system-level testing.
- Configure and operate specialized telecommunications test equipment and analyzers.
- Develop or modify scripts to automate test execution and improve testing efficiency.
- Analyze test results, identify irregularities, and document findings.
- Maintain accurate testing procedures, technical records, equipment configurations, and troubleshooting documentation.
- Support the introduction and evaluation of new telecommunications products.
- Collaborate with technicians, engineers, management, and other internal teams to resolve technical issues.
- Provide technical guidance and support to Test Technicians, as needed.
- Communicate technical concerns, testing results, and potential delivery risks clearly and promptly.
- Use Microsoft Excel and Word to maintain testing records, procedures, reports, and related documentation.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Experience
- Hands-on experience testing, troubleshooting, repairing, or evaluating telecommunications equipment.
- Familiarity with scripting tools such as Bash to automate test execution.
- Hands-on experience using telecommunications test equipment and analyzers, including tools such as:
- Viavi T-Berd
- OmniSwitch
- SmartBits
- Oscilloscope
- Strong understanding of fiber optics, optical testing, signal integrity, and optical networking.
- Familiarity with legacy and modern communication interfaces, including RS232.
- Experience using serial-port terminal software such as:
- PuTTY
- Procomm
- SecureCRT
- Ability to research, develop, implement, and clearly document technical testing procedures.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret test results and independently diagnose equipment failures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Ability to manage technical priorities while supporting quality and customer-delivery requirements.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with Nokia hardware and telecommunications products.
- Knowledge of telecommunications protocols and command interfaces, including TL1 and CLI.
- Experience working with remanufactured, repaired, or legacy telecommunications equipment.
- Experience developing or improving automated test procedures.
- Previous experience providing technical guidance or training to technicians.
- Relevant engineering degree, technical degree, military technical training, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
Experience / Education Requirements: BS electrical engineering, 10 years’ experience test engineering. Telecom industry preferred.
