Digital Forensics Analyst

The DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office (DKDA) is currently accepting resumes for a Digital Forensics Analyst to work in the Digital Forensics Unit (DFU). DFU obtains, analyzes, and investigates digital evidence as it pertains to criminal cases, including data from cellular phones, computers, and social media. The unit is comprised of law enforcement, civilian analysts, and an assistant district attorney. The unit assists law enforcement with search warrants, works with prosecutors and investigators to prepare cases, and testifies in court when needed.

Principal duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: examining computers, cellular telephones, and other electronic devices to recover data; analyzing data recovered during examinations, drawing conclusions, and formulating reports; working with various law enforcement agencies to review recovered data, reports, and findings/conclusions; and explaining and refining findings and conclusions as necessary. This may also include other forms of digital evidence such as analyzing various social media platforms and associated records returned from authorized search warrants and information gained from open-source intelligence. The Digital Forensics Analyst should be prepared to work in a team environment under sometimes stressful conditions due to time constraints and be prepared to testify to findings in court proceedings if necessary. Must be willing to work after hours, weekends and holidays as needed.

Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training certified candidates should also submit a copy of POST records.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Minimum three years of hands-on computer and mobile device forensic examination experience
  • Strong working knowledge of specialty hardware and software commonly used in computer and cellular telephone forensics
  • Comprehensive understanding of Windows and Mac operating systems, computer networks, and hardware architecture
  • Proficiency with forensic tools such as EnCase, FTK, Cellebrite, Magnet Axiom, and similar platforms
  • Experience with non-forensics analytical software and databases
  • Practical knowledge of investigations involving computers, smartphones, tablets, IoT devices, and various electronic storage media
  • Understanding of legal requirements for digital evidence handling and chain of custody
  • Current or former law enforcement officer OR minimum three years supporting law enforcement or similar investigative organization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing and courtroom testimony

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will demonstrate their expertise through one or more of the following pathways:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Digital Forensics, or related field
  • OR equivalent combination of education, professional certifications, and experience

Experience

  • Minimum three (3) years of full-time professional-level digital forensics examination experience in a law enforcement environment or similar investigative setting
  • Experience conducting criminal investigations or crime analysis work
  • Demonstrated proficiency in digital evidence recovery, analysis, and reporting

Professional Certifications

Highly valued certifications from recognized organizations such as:

Vendor-Neutral Organizations

  • International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists (IACIS)
  • National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C)
  • SANS/GIAC digital forensics certifications

Software Vendor Certifications (examples Include)

  • Cellebrite certifications
  • Magnet Axiom certifications

Note: Professional certifications from recognized digital forensics organizations may substitute for formal education requirements.
