What are the responsibilities and job description for the Data Center Infrastructure Engineer position at Proof Group?
Data Center Infrastructure Engineer
Company: Proof Group
Location: SOMA, San Francisco, CA (On-site)
Type: Full-time
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
ABOUT PROOF GROUP
Proof Group is a digital asset and emerging technology investment firm that also operates critical infrastructure at scale. We run validators and infrastructure across major networks for ourselves and some of the largest financial institutions in the world. Our team has built and operated systems at Goldman Sachs, CME, and pioneering crypto institutions—plus AI compute at serious scale.
We're not just investors who talk about infrastructure. We run it.
Now we're scaling our own high-performance bare metal compute. We're our own first customer, which means the infrastructure needs to be excellent—not just good enough.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
THE ROLE
We're hiring someone to lead our physical infrastructure from day one. You'll be the primary hands-on operator for our 250-server R&D facility in SOMA, responsible for everything from racking hardware to configuring network gear to helping automate provisioning.
This is a build role. You'll work closely with our engineering team (strong, but cloud-native) to stand up infrastructure that meets the standards we hold ourselves to across all our operations.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Build and operate physical infrastructure
• Rack, stack, and cable servers, switches, and power distribution
• Own hardware inventory, spares, and vendor relationships
• Troubleshoot failures and coordinate replacements
• Manage facility operations: power, cooling, physical security, access
Own the network layer
• Configure and maintain switching infrastructure and out-of-band management
• Implement VLANs, BGP, and IP address management
• Document topology and keep diagrams current
• Coordinate with upstream providers on connectivity
Connect physical and software systems
• Partner with engineers on bare metal provisioning automation
• Integrate IPMI/BMC, PXE boot, and inventory systems
• Validate new hardware before production deployment
• Find ways to reduce manual work through better tooling
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Required:
• 3 years hands-on in data centers or colocation environments
• Real experience racking servers, running structured cabling, troubleshooting hardware
• Working knowledge of networking: switching, routing, VLANs, BGP fundamentals
• Comfortable with Linux and remote management (IPMI, iLO, iDRAC)
• Can work independently—you'll often be the only one on-site
• High standards for your own work
• Strongly prefer Bay-Area based applicants
Valuable:
• Network automation experience (Ansible, Netbox, Nautobot)
• Familiarity with bare metal provisioning (MAAS, Tinkerbell, Foreman, Ironic)
• Scripting in Python or Bash
• GPU or high-performance compute infrastructure background
• Power distribution and capacity planning experience
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHY THIS ROLE
You'll have real ownership over infrastructure that matters. We use what we build, so quality isn't optional—it's the baseline. You'll work with a team that has operated systems at the highest levels of finance and technology, and we'll expect you to meet that bar.
This is an early role with significant scope. If you want to build something you're proud of, with people who care about getting it right, we'd like to hear from you.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
COMPENSATION
Base salary: $175,000 - $225,000 depending on experience, plus meaningful performance bonuses and benefits.

TO APPLY
Send your resume and a short note about infrastructure you've built or fixed that you're proud of. If you have photos of your cabling work, we'd like to see them.
