Educational Specialist

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Education Specialist, along with the Program Director and Assistant Site Director and Education Director is responsible for coordinating educational activities and developing curriculum and reviewing lesson plans. Education Specialists will assist Program Directors, instructors, counselors and youth Workers. In program activities and assure that the homework help component for the program runs effectively and smoothly. The Education Specialist also provides training for staff. Instruction and activities designed to promote subject mastery, develop gradelevel competencies, and teach study skills. The Education Specialist will also be responsible for creating a safe and positive environment, providing opportunities for learning, interaction, and academic / personal growth. The Administrative Educational Specialist will also assist in the reviewing, writing and creation of lesson plans. The incumbent will be responsible for planning, organizing, and leading groups of assigned participants in a variety of educational enhancement activities in the areas of Career, work, literacy, and leadership which will teach skills and help to improve overall personal and academic performance.

KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•  Meet development and academic standards for instruction.
•  Tutor, mentor and coach staff of Group leaders, Instructors and specialists in areas of 
•  Social Academic competence.
•  Assist in activity development, observation and review of comprehension and retention of specific subject teaching material and curriculums.
•  Help develop scope of tools to meet academic success.
•  Identify alternative explanations of subject material.
•  Work with the Site Director and program staff to develop Scope of activities, assignments, practice and strategies.
•  Document, track, and maintain regular progress and records of feedback regarding curriculum and lessons in progress.
• Work cooperatively with Counselors, professional staff, teachers, and another program and staff.
•  Help with the implementation, creation and review of lesson plans for the program.
•  Promote an inclusive environment that embraces the diversity of all.
•  Support and maintain and recommend a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere within the learning structures that is consistent and sensitive to the needs of participants, emotional, or behavioral differences.
•  Maintain accurate program documentation.
•  Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents and guardians through regular communication about their children’s strengths and areas of growth.
• Adhere to all Department of Health, DOE and DYCD or Funder’s expectations and regulations.

• Ensure the health, safety and well-being of participants in the program, by providing 
• appropriate supervision.
•  Actively participate and support training sessions, designate schedule workshops and 
• meetings as appropriate.
•  Attend and assist in organizational meetings, staff development and organizational events.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in education, child development or a related field
• *Masters Preferred (Licensed)
• Minimum of 3 years teaching, instruction, and training experience
• Knowledge of common core learning standards
• Experience in developing curriculum, lesson plans and workshop facilitation 
• Competency in education and youth development
• Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Experience working with children from diverse background Possess an understanding and 
• knowledge of public school functions, Common Core, and specific knowledge in ageappropriate teachings and curriculum.
• General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
• General Knowledge of DYCD, DOE, and DOH mandates
• Ability to work as part of a team within a school community
