JOB SUMMARY
The Transformer Bid Engineer is responsible for preparing technical proposals and bid packages for power transformers in response to customer inquiries, requests for quotation (RFQs), and bid specifications. This role serves as a key interface between Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, and customers to ensure technically compliant, competitive, and commercially viable proposals. The position requires a strong understanding of transformer design, industry standards, manufacturing processes, and cost optimization.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review customer inquiries, RFQs, bid specifications, and associated contract documents.
- Review drawings, technical specifications, and supporting documentation provided with RFQs.
- Interpret customer requirements and applicable industry standards, including IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and NEMA.
- Develop transformer designs and configurations that meet customer performance requirements while optimizing cost and manufacturability.
- Prepare accurate and competitive bid packages for power transformers, including Thermal design.
- Perform transformer design evaluations using engineering tools and software to verify compliance with customer specifications.
- Run impulse, short-circuit, thermal, and other design verification programs as required to ensure technical compliance.
- Develop technical proposals, data sheets, design summaries, and cost estimates.
- Prepare technical clarifications, exceptions, and compliance documents for customer review.
- Coordinate engineering bid activities to ensure proposals are completed and submitted on time.
- Support Sales and Commercial teams during technical discussions.
- Respond to customer questions and requests for technical clarification throughout the bidding process.
- Perform cost analysis and identify opportunities for design optimization and cost reduction.
- Evaluate technical risks associated with bid proposals.
- Track bid performance, win/loss data, and lessons learned to support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support standardization efforts and process enhancements within the bid engineering function.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Strong understanding of power transformer design principles, including:
- Two-winding transformers, LTC (Load Tap Changer) transformers, Autotransformers and Generator Step-Up (GSU) transformers
- Knowledge of transformer components, accessories, cooling systems, and auxiliary equipment.
- Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, IEC, NEMA, and applicable utility specifications.
- Understanding of transformer manufacturing processes, testing requirements, and quality standards.
- Proficiency with transformer design and analysis software
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to interpret complex customer specifications and technical requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and bid deadlines simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required Education / Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in transformer design, bid engineering, or a related field.
Experience with power transformer design is preferred.
Preferred Education / Experience
Master’s degree in electrical engineering.
Minimum of 4 years of experience in transformer design, bid engineering, or a related engineering role.
Knowledge of utility and industrial transformer applications.
Key Working Relationships
Engineering Organization, including mechanical, electrical, manufacturing and applications engineering groups
Operations Management, including plant Supervision, Quality, Planning, etc.
Physical Demands
Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time
Working Conditions
Shop-floor and office environment, located on large manufacturing campus
