JOB SUMMARYThe Mechanical Engineer is responsible for maintaining effective mechanical design bases for transformer layouts and for providing technical expertise to customers both within and outside of the organization. This role will review projects assigned to them comparing customer specifications to other design data, noting any inconsistencies or special requirements.PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESSystematically reviews the mechanical design rules of all products to ensure that customer needs are being met while maintaining organizational cost and reliability goals. The process involves properly defining customer requirements, performing detailed analysis of loads and stresses, materials, and manufacturing processes, to determine conformity to organizational cost, quality, and reliability goals.Recommends, plans, and executes approved projects that improve product competitiveness. Projects are cross-functional and involve working closely with manufacturing, purchasing and other functions.Identifies, plans, and executes approved projects to provide new product designs and extensions of current products. Projects are inter-department team efforts.Develops and recommends solutions to complex and unusual order related requirements in order to manage risk.Documents the rational for mechanical designs and provides rules for executing specific product designs.Provides technical expertise and training to others in the areas of mechanical design, stress analysis, and manufacturing processes.Understands and correctly interprets the product scope, quality standards and industry standards to ensure the proper design and application of transformer and substation products.Supports Marketing in preparation of bids through interpretation of product scope and innovative application of transformer and substation products to meet unique customer needs.May act as project leader on assigned projects.Consults with Marketing and customers to find areas of product expansion and refinement.Resolves specific production and customer problems by working with engineering, manufacturing quality assurance, field service and purchasing personnel and vendors.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESExcellent process and problem solving skillsAnalytical capacity for creative problem-solving, process design and product application, design and developmentProficient in professional communication and technical writingRisk management and cost analysisPlanning scheduling and project managementData collection and analysis skillsUnderstanding of and skill in use of specific design methods, rationales and tools (e.g. FEA, DFM, robust design)Current knowledge of related technology (e.g. IS technology, heat transfer, metallurgy, metal processing, assembly)Understanding of industry standards and practicesUnderstanding of design verification and testing techniquesProficient in the use of 3D modelling and analysis tools for configurable productsBroad knowledge in mechanical engineering with emphasis in analysis and design skillsSAP experience Proven ability to perform assignments under minimal supervision, with assistance as required for design questions or technical problemsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCERequired Education / ExperienceBachelor’s degree in mechanical Engineer or related field3 years of experience including product design in an Engineer to Order environmentPreferred Education / ExperienceMaster’s Degree or equivalent studies desirable with continuing education in engineering, economic and business, and management topics 5 years of experience including 3 years of broad experience in transformer and substation product design plus 2 years of product development and project leadershipCONTEXTADDITIONAL INFORMATION Key Working RelationshipsEngineering Organization, including mechanical, electrical, manufacturing and applications engineering Operations Management, including plant Supervision, Quality, Planning, etc.Expected to meet with customers, suppliers, and our other facilities to discuss designs or new products Physical DemandsMust be able to sit or stand for extended periods of timeWorking ConditionsShop-floor and office environment, located on large manufacturing campus.
