What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Program Tutor position at Project: VISION?
Project: VISION (www.projectvisionchicago.org) is a small grassroots nonprofit organization that provides free after school programming to youth in Chicago's Chinatown, Bridgeport, and surrounding neighborhoods. We are seeking Tutors for our School Day and After School Homework Tutoring Programs to assist middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). Tutors help students build their knowledge, basic skills, and good study habits so that they can succeed in their academics. We also expect Tutors to act as trusted mentors who serve as positive adult role models and provide youth with guidance and support as they develop life skills and build on their social emotional learning. We are seeking candidates with a strong personal academic record and passion for teaching and mentoring the next generation of youth.
Responsibilities:
- Work with students in one-on-one or small group settings to provide homework help and check, subject tutoring, and assist with test preparation
- Lead enrichment activities (pre-planned by staff) that build student knowledge, problem-solving, and excitement around learning
- Be a positive role model and provide mentorship to students
- Maintain student documentation (attendance, progress, and other data) using required reporting tools
- Work with PV staff and school staff to align on students' learning goals and collaborate to develop strategies to best support each student
Qualifications:
- Must have completed high school or equivalent, at least some college highly preferred
- Must have a strong academic record and be confident teaching a variety of subjects
- Experience working with youth in the 11-14 and/or 14-18 age groups preferred
- Embraces growth mindset and continuous improvement in your work
- Organized, reliable, punctual, self-motivated, and team-oriented/collaborative
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Shifts are available:
- During the school day: Mondays-Thursdays from 8a-2p and will take place in-person onsite at local schools in the Armour Square (Chinatown) and Bridgeport neighborhoods. Tutors must commit to work all for shifts each week.
- After school: Mondays-Fridays 3-7p. Shifts may take place at the PV Center or at a local school. Tutors must be able to commit to working at least three shifts (minimum 3 hours per shift)
- We ask Tutors to commit to working through the end of the academic school year (May 28, 2027). Also, candidates who are able to work 4-5 shifts per week will be prioritized.
