The WASH Assistant will support the implementation of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities within Project HOPE’s Gaza Response program. In the context of active conflict, damaged infrastructure, overcrowded shelters, and increased public health risks, the WASH Assistant contributes to improving access to safe water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene promotion services for affected populations.
The position provides operational and field-level support to WASH interventions in communities and supported health facilities. The WASH Assistant ensures activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and in alignment with humanitarian standards, safeguarding principles, accountability to affected populations, and Do No Harm approaches. This position is being advertised contingent upon award; while the recruitment process will proceed as part of organizational preparedness, no formal offer will be extended until funding is confirmed
Principal Responsibilities
Support implementation of emergency WASH activities in targeted communities and health facilities.
Assist in water quality testing and monitoring activities under the supervision of the WASH Officer.
Support installation, maintenance, and minor rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities as required.
Support community-based WASH activities, including follow up of community Health promoters, training and strengthening WASH committees and supporting hygiene promotion and community awareness activities.
Assist in distribution of hygiene kits and WASH-related supplies.
Support hygiene promotion activities and community awareness sessions.
Conduct field visits to monitor WASH infrastructure functionality and report issues to the WASH Officer.
Maintain basic records of activities, distributions, and field reports in line with Project HOPE requirements.
Support coordination with community representatives and local authorities during implementation activities.
Promote safe water handling, sanitation practices, and environmental hygiene awareness.
Ensure all activities are implemented in line with safeguarding, protection mainstreaming, accountability, and Do No Harm principles.
Other Duties As Assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Diploma or technical certification in Environmental Health, Water Management, Civil Works, Public Health, Engineering or a related field.
Minimum 1–2 years of experience supporting WASH or community-based programs.
Experience in humanitarian or emergency settings is desirable.
Basic knowledge of water quality, sanitation systems, and hygiene promotion principles.
Ability to work in high-pressure and conflict-affected environments.
Strong communication and community engagement skills.
Demonstrated commitment to humanitarian principles and safeguarding standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in conflict-affected or hardship contexts such as Gaza.
Familiarity with Sphere standards and humanitarian WASH guidelines.
Experience supporting emergency WASH interventions or outbreak prevention activities.
Basic technical training in water testing or sanitation system maintenance.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be mobile in an office environment and able to use standard office equipment.
Must be able to communicate in verbal and written form and must be able to travel internationally.
Project HOPE employees may be required to travel or work in countries where working conditions are classified as “hardship.”
Work Environment
Typical office environment with exposure to a minimal noise level.
Emergency deployments may be in resource-deprived environments with austere living conditions.
Travel for extended periods may be by air and/or other modes of transportation.
While international travel is not a regular part of every job, programmatic needs may require it intermittently.
Project HOPE employees may be required to travel or work in countries where working conditions are classified as “hardship.”
