Job Summary:

The Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate and motivator to recovering individuals in order to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery. The CPS must demonstrate an ability to share personal recovery experiences, develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships and have an understanding of and respect for each individual's unique path to recovery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build relationships and foster a sense of community while encouraging Residents to participate and support various functions and opportunities at Project HOME.

  • Actively identify and support linkages to treatment for behavioral health care, including medication assisted treatment (MAT), and community-based resources (communities of recovery, educational, vocational, social, cultural, spiritual resources, mutual self- help groups, professional services, etc.) that support the person seeking recovery goals and interests. This will involve a collaborative effort with the Residential Staff on site. Coordinate services and linkages with outside agencies/providers as needed.

  • Assist in the development and enhancement of an individualized recovery plan, identify and prioritize strengths and needs, recognizing many pathways to recovery, accessing and advocating for recovery and community resources. Provides coaching to achieve goals, identifies working opportunities, and makes recommendations to supervisor regarding the needs of the community.

  • Assist Residents with learning to maintain lease obligations, independently or with the help of supports. 

  • Become familiar with all emergency procedures. Work with Residents and supports through crises, assessing the situation and making necessary plans/interventions in collaboration with Residential Staff. 

  • Maintain accurate records in electronic database, adhering to established documentation standards. Observe confidentiality, privacy, and dignity of each resident.

  • Create and facilitate a variety of group actives that support substance use recovery, including recovery groups on site as well as escorting residents into the community to attend AA/NA meetings and other recovery events. 

  • Utilize and teach problem solving techniques with individuals and groups.

  • Foster and model respect, empathy, and understanding of Residents. Support staff in identifying environments that are conducive to recovery. Provides and advocates for effective recovery-based services. 

  • Attend meetings and training, including supervision, staff meetings, community meetings, team meetings.

Education and Experience Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

  • Must be a Certified Peer Specialist or Certified Recovery Specialist with at least one (1) year of experience working in the behavioral health field providing peer support.

Preferred Experience:

  • Knowledge of Philadelphia behavioral health, substance use/abuse, and housing systems, services, and resources. 

  • Knowledge of crisis intervention, de-escalation.

  • Group facilitation experience.

  • Valid Pa driver's license.

Core Skills:

  • Good organizational skills.

  • Very strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Team experience.

  • Strong computer literacy.

Physical requirements:

work that involves both on site and traveling in the community.
