What are the responsibilities and job description for the Industrial Mechanical Draftsman position at Progressive Products, Inc.?
Industrial Mechanical Draftsman
Progressive Products, Inc. – Pittsburg, KS
$24.00–$28.00 per hour
Full-Time
Build More Than Drawings
Progressive Products, Inc. is looking for an experienced Industrial Draftsman II to join our engineering and manufacturing team.
If you enjoy taking an idea, measurement, sample, sketch, or existing design and turning it into something that can actually be built on the shop floor, this position may be a great fit.
You’ll work primarily in SolidWorks, creating detailed parts, assemblies, fabrication drawings, and production-ready drawing packages for a variety of industrial and manufactured products.
This is not a position where you will spend your day making minor drawing changes. We are looking for someone who understands how parts fit together, how products are fabricated, and how to recognize potential problems before drawings reach production.
This position reports directly to the Lead Engineer and works closely with engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, and production personnel.
What You'll Do
Create detailed 3D parts and multi-component assemblies in SolidWorks.
Produce complete fabrication and production drawing packages.
Develop models and drawings from concepts, measurements, physical samples, sketches, or verbal direction.
Create fabricated assemblies, weldments, and sheet-metal components.
Work with mechanical assemblies and industrial equipment components.
Create drawings for mobile stage and pneumatic conveying components.
Design and document production tooling and fixtures.
Use SolidWorks sheet metal, weldments, configurations, and exploded views.
Create and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs).
Apply appropriate tolerances and manufacturing information to drawings.
Use interference detection to identify fit and assembly issues before production.
Troubleshoot common SolidWorks modeling, mating, and assembly problems.
Modify existing products while maintaining proper model, assembly, and drawing relationships.
Review your work for manufacturability, fit, interference, and drawing accuracy.
Work directly with production and fabrication personnel to help resolve drawing and manufacturing questions.
Independently resolve normal drafting and modeling issues.
Identify major design, structural, safety, or engineering concerns and escalate them to the Lead Engineer.
What You'll Work On
Our products involve real-world manufacturing and fabrication. Depending on the project, your work may include:
Fabricated steel assemblies
Weldments
Sheet-metal components
Mechanical assemblies
Industrial equipment components
Mobile stage components
Pneumatic conveying equipment
Production tooling and fixtures
Custom manufactured components
Existing product improvements and modifications
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who can do more than operate CAD software. The right person understands that a good drawing has to work in the real world.
You should be able to:
Work confidently in SolidWorks.
Create detailed parts and multi-component assemblies.
Produce accurate fabrication and production drawings.
Work with SolidWorks sheet metal and weldment tools.
Create exploded views and detailed BOMs.
Read and understand manufacturing and fabrication drawings.
Understand tolerances, fit, and basic manufacturing requirements.
Recognize potential interference, fit, and manufacturability problems.
Work from measurements, samples, concepts, and verbal instructions.
Manage routine and moderately complex drafting assignments with limited supervision.
Produce work that requires minimal correction.
Communicate effectively with engineering and shop-floor personnel.
Know when an issue can be resolved through normal drafting practices and when it should be brought to the Lead Engineer.
Experience That Will Help You Succeed
We especially want to hear from candidates with experience in:
Manufacturing or fabrication environments
Welded assemblies
Sheet-metal fabrication
Industrial equipment
CNC or laser-cut components
Formed and machined parts
Production tooling and fixtures
Creating drawings used directly by welders, fabricators, machinists, and production employees.
What Success Looks Like
A successful Industrial Draftsman II can take a routine or moderately complex project and move it from concept to an accurate, production-ready drawing package with limited correction.
You'll be expected to catch normal issues involving fit, interference, manufacturability, modeling, assemblies, and drawing accuracy before they become problems on the production floor.
You will have the independence to solve normal drafting issues while working under the direction of the Lead Engineer, who will provide guidance and make decisions involving significant engineering, structural, design, or safety concerns.
Compensation
$24.00–$28.00 per hour
$49,920–$58,240 annually based on a 40-hour workweek.
Starting pay within the range will be based on SolidWorks proficiency, drafting experience, manufacturing knowledge, and the ability to independently produce accurate fabrication and production drawings.
Why This Position?
This is a good opportunity for someone who enjoys seeing their work go beyond the computer screen.
You'll have the opportunity to create drawings and models that turn into real manufactured products, work directly with the people building those products, solve practical manufacturing challenges, and develop your drafting skills while working closely with an experienced engineering team.
If you have strong SolidWorks skills, understand fabrication and manufacturing, and take pride in producing accurate work that can be built from, we'd like to hear from you.
