Role Description

The Mechanical Engineering Designer II leverages their experience to design and develop documents for a range of public and private projects. They collaborate with project managers and engineers to complete plan design and production, preparing design documents and permits for site plans, utility plans and profiles, road design, traffic signal plans, grading plans, and right-of-way plans using their competency in AutoCAD Civil 3D software. They excel in planning, aligning, and driving results while effectively collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.

Essential Functions

Project Deliverables

  • Contribute to the production of preliminary concepts and full design phase deliverables, including drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and additional materials with oversight from senior engineers.
  • Utilize their proficiency in design software (Revit, AutoCAD 3D, HEC RAS, EPANET, MicroStation) to generate deliverables accurately and within deadlines.
  • Provide CAD services and final engineering documents consistent with company standards, learning best-practices for efficiency.

Project Collaboration

  • Maintain multiple small project assignments and work with multiple project engineers.
  • Complete assigned duties, including deliverable creation, estimates, and documentation across multiple small projects.
  • Produce contract documents that are efficient and consistent with the scope of work, schedule, and fees allotted to complete different phases of the project.

Review and Compliance

  • Review their own work for accuracy and assists with compliance, acquiring knowledge of quality control processes before submitting for further review.
  • Alert senior team members to inconsistencies in design and documentation, while developing the ability to proactively resolve them.
  • Assist senior staff by attending off-site meetings and field inspections, learning to diagnose problems and explore possible solutions.

Teamwork and Support

  • Actively participate in team meetings and ‘Lessons Learned’ sessions, contributing insights and learning from more experienced staff.
  • Proactively engage other team members to identify opportunities for learning about more complex project tasks and situations.

SPECIALIZED ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE

  • Assist in reviewing building codes (e.g., fire, plumbing, mechanical, fuel/gas) and ensuring designs meet regulatory requirements, while coordinating with other disciplines.
  • Help design and integrate controls for mechanical systems, including sensors, actuators, and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Perform load calculations and assist in selecting equipment like pumps, fans, and heat exchangers to meet project requirements.
  • Contribute to HVAC system designs by calculating energy loads, airflow, and static pressures to optimize performance and efficiency.

Qualifications

Education and Licensure

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.
  • Typical employees have a minimum of 5 years of post-graduation professional engineering experience.

Technology Skills

  • Proficient in using technology and standard software tools and search engines.
  • Comfortable in using Revit and AutoCAD.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods, use a computer, and occasionally lift items up to 25 pounds and work in various environments including office and field settings.
