Job Purpose

The Director of Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement is responsible for providing leadership and

direction for the Locomotive division. This role ensures that best practices are properly documented and communicated across the division to minimize waste by ensuring the

proper methods are being executed.

Key Job Elements

  • Provide leadership to quality / test managers, team leaders and professional staff;
  • Establish and develop common processes and procedures for the Business Unit;
  • Instill a quality culture by developing and deploying a comprehensive quality assurance, continuous


improvement and supplier quality strategy;

  • Supplier Quality: Ensure the proper execution of product introduction through the PPAP process;
  • New Product Introduction: Ensure proper procedures are followed to validate the process and products


are introduced with minimal interruptions and defects;

  • Participate as a business partner with the operations staff in managing and leading the direction of the


business;

  • Provide 6 Sigma leadership, change management directions and guidance in proactively identifying


opportunities and removing / eliminating barriers;

  • Lead audit function and process across the division and each facility regarding Continuous Improvement


opportunities, and compliance of AAR standards, ISO certification and EN standards/certification;

  • Manage budget to plan;
  • Select and develop team members;
  • Troubleshoot issues and provide recommendations for resolutions;
  • Manage QMS to ensure facility and operations comply to standards;
  • Monitor daily QMS operations and communicate with key stakeholders regarding quality;
  • Work with design team to implement corrective actions and improve process and overall product;
  • Coordinate with supplier team to manage quality and responsible for vendor communication;
  • Work with program teams to complete product launches on schedule;
  • Regular interaction with customer and maintain customer issues logs;
  • Contribute and assist in the development of Quality Control plan.
  • Understanding of ISO 9001 standards and practices.


Education / Training

College degree – BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred;

Qualifications And Experience

This position requires an experienced and results‐driven leader that demonstrates solid analytical, communication,

and team management skills. Adept at managing business operations, implementing quality management and

continuous improvement programs, and developing process improvement initiatives.

  • Min 10 years Quality Assurance experience, including leading teams of engineers and/or Six Sigma


professionals;

  • Knowledge of the rail industry and specific business unit and diverse manufacturing processes (Welding,


Machining, Mechanical and Electro‐Mechanical Assembly, etc.);

  • Proven track record of reducing cost of poor quality;
  • Experience driving up first pass yields, and reducing scrap/rework;
  • Knowledge and experience with AAR standards, ISO 9001 certification/audits and relevant EN


standards/requirements/certification;

  • Extensive experience with ISO, LEAN, Six Sigma, 6S and TQM methodologies;
  • Ability to travel 20 to 40% domestically and internationally;
  • MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio;
  • Above average troubleshooting skills;
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex.


Essential and Physical Activities Functions:

  • Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium- level lifting or carrying (up to 50 pounds).
  • Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment. Depending on assigned project, position may occasionally require motions involved in an industrial working environment, including some low to intense levels of pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, grasping.
  • Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing.
  • Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85 decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE. Position may require travel as necessary, both domestic and international.
  • Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards.
  • Safety – Position may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.
