Strength – Position typically involves work in a standard office environment. Occasional standing and walking. Heavy lifting is rare, but may be required. Motion – Position regularly requires standard repetitive motions and hand/eye coordination associated with office communications. May require bending, lifting, standing, walking, etc. in cases where Safety investigations require them. Vision/Hearing Requirements – Constant verbal communications, including both talking and hearing. Work Environment – Position is Safety Sensitive and will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Position may involve work in a non-temperature controlled facility. Position will require regular visits to industrial environment, including potential for noise (85 decibels), cold/heat (0-100 degrees F), exposure to hazardous materials, heavy equipment, high levels of dust, and other hazardous working conditions. May be required to remain for long periods of time in hazardous work environments to investigate and mitigate accidents/incidents. Travel may be required 50% of the time (<25% during pandemic conditions). Emotional Demands – High level of responsibility. Must be available 24/7 in case of emergencies/incidents. Responsible for mission critical compliance. Requires significant interpersonal skills while bearing a very high standard for compliance. Requires 30-50% travel. - Drive, update, and propose a comprehensive, multi-year strategy to continue Progress Rail’s journey towards EHS performance excellence within the Business Unit. This includes work in personal safety, environment, occupational health, process safety, and product stewardship. The strategy focuses both on technical systems/standards, and also on leadership/behavioral/cultural aspects.
- Support and coordinate with Business Unit Senior Leadership as it relates to EHS integration within the organization.
- Lead and oversee specific programs to assure regulatory compliance in EHS.
- Support facility start-ups, expansions, mergers and acquisitions from the EHS perspective.
- Manage remediation work and collaborate with the Legal department on any long-term litigation or anticipated litigation that may have EHS components.
- Talent management for direct reports that includes hiring, succession planning, and development.
- Manage EHS information and reporting, including the generation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports and budgets, their corresponding analysis, the proposition of improvement actions, and presentation to senior business leaders.
- Provide support, ideas, pilot programs, and establish formal processes and systems in areas including security, sustainable development, crisis management, community relations and others.
- Actively participate in and contribute to Business Unit meetings and projects
- Other job-related duties as assigned.
- Coordinate preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reporting requirements for assigned operations and programs.
- Serve as primary contact and liaison with regulatory agencies for assigned facilities.
- Complete trend analyses and determine root causes for reported non-compliances.
- Assist in preparation of environmental and safety compliance audits and inspections.
- Assist with development of Corporate EHS directives and review implementation at assigned facilities.
- Provide assistance on environmental and safety compliance due diligence for site acquisitions.
- Conduct investigations, direct remediation activities, and make presentations to appropriate personnel.
- BS Degree in Environmental, Scientific, Chemical, Civil, Safety or Engineering preferred, Master's degree beneficial
- Minimum of 15 years’ experience in EHS field required
- Established record in generating outstanding results, including decreases in incidents and injuries, solutions to regulatory challenges, efficiently completing remediation work, and positively contributing to the bottom line.
- An ability to complete accurate analysis, propose solutions, create task forces, establish plans, address obstacles, oversee progress, and complete long-term, complex projects and initiatives.
- Comfortable and skilled at multitasking, responsive, quick, able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Possesses influencing skills, with an ability to sell, propose, convince and influence peers, site managers, the executive committee and employees at large to adopt new practices, change, and improve.
- Open, direct, and clear communication style. Able to summarize complicated concepts and make a point succinctly. Comfortable constructively confronting issues and collaborating to find solutions.
- Working knowledge of relevant EHS regulations
