THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Plant Manager, the detail-oriented and analytical Cost Accountant will join our team at our Lumberton North Carolina manufacturing facility. The ideal candidate will play a key role in tracking, analyzing, and controlling costs associated with production and operations. This position is instrumental in supporting financial decision-making and ensuring the accuracy of cost records and reports.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyze and monitor manufacturing costs (raw materials, labor, overhead) to ensure accurate cost allocation.
- Prepare, review, and reconcile cost reports and inventory valuations on a regular basis.
- Develop and implement cost accounting systems and procedures to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Conduct variance analysis between actual costs and standard costs; investigate and explain variances.
- Collaborate with production, engineering, and supply chain teams to support cost control initiatives.
- Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and periodic financial close processes.
- Support internal and external audits by providing documentation and explanations related to cost accounting.
- Recommend cost-saving measures and process improvements based on data analysis.
- Maintain and update bills of materials (BOM) and standard costs within the ERP system.
- Costing: Support and validate costing procedures
FIRST YEAR – MEASURES OF SUCCESS
- Bill of Materials (BOM) Integrity: Ensure all bills of materials are accurate, up to date, and reflective of true production inputs and costs, including leading a comprehensive review and cleanup of existing BOMs.
- Operational Understanding: Develop a strong working knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment to effectively support accurate costing and informed decision-making.
- Cost Accuracy & Insight: Validate and refine existing cost assumptions by establishing clear, data-driven product costing, enabling greater transparency and improved financial accuracy.
THE INDIVIDUAL
Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the company and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following experience and attributes:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field (required).
Experience
- 2 years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment (preferred).
- Proficient with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) and advanced Excel skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across departments.
- Knowledge of GAAP and cost accounting principles.
- CPA/CMA certification is a plus.
