What are the responsibilities and job description for the Design Engineer position at Professional Engineering Consultants?
Responsible for design on multiple projects, working with other design disciplines, internally and externally to PEC, to develop engineering solutions for PEC’s Clients. This position will be responsible for preparing design deliverables for a variety of projects, while maintaining PEC’s standard of excellence. This position utilizes BIM/CAD software, hand calculations, and computer-based calculations.

- Perform engineering design, coordinates with other design staff for construction documents and specification production, in compliance with building codes, construction administration, and development of reports/studies
- Understanding of related electrical codes such as the NEC, NESC, and associated IEEE codes regarding industry standards for electrical engineering.
- Develop deliverables including construction drawing packages, equipment procurement packages, and provide engineering studies as required for our clients to support their needs.
- Perform calculations such as Arc Flash, Motor Transients, Coordination studies, Voltage Drop, Cable Pulling as examples.
- Perform tasks during construction administration, including review of submittals, site investigations, and RFI response under the direction of the Project Engineer.
- Provide Engineering support to contractor and client during project construction. This includes but is not limited to review of electrical equipment for substations, heavy industrial, and oil and gas facilities to ensure proper specifications, providing on-site assistance to client for coordination and conflict resolution during the installation of electrical equipment which includes requests for information from the construction contract team.
- Perform design and takeoff computations by hand and by computer software.
- Utilize spreadsheet software and historical data to provide construction cost estimates for our projects for a funding and budgetary perspective.
- Perform electrical computations using SKM, ETAP, EasyPower, etc. to ensure proper rating of equipment for safety and reliability to our clients and the general public.
- Organize multiple projects and tasks and completes them in a timely manner, on schedule, and per PEC Standards
- Provides electrical project management services utilizing PEC standard tools and documents.
- Examples include our PEC Business Practices and software such as MS Excel, MS Project, and resource planning utilizing manhours.
- Organize project information and files, according to corporate standard practices and workflows
- Follow PEC Business Practices and Quality Procedures to ensure proper documentation is filed accordingly.
- Our division also has set expectations and workflows for proper record keeping and documentation required for electrical engineering services.
- Effectively communicates and coordinates with the Design Team, to complete design tasks on numerous projects
- Utilizes Microsoft software such as TEAMS, Outlook, and Planner for coordination on action items and communication with clients and team members.
- Our division also has a project notebook template in OneNote that is required for every electrical engineering project we perform.
- These processes allow an engineer to juggle multiple projects and stay organized with themselves, and others related to the project.
