Position Summary
The General Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and profitability of the Elma lumberyard. This position oversees all aspects of branch operations, including employee leadership, sales performance, inventory management, customer service, financial results, merchandising, safety, and compliance.
The General Manager will develop and execute strategies to grow the business, improve operational efficiency, strengthen customer relationships, and create a safe, productive, and customer-focused work environment. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring a strong presence throughout the branch, including the sales floor, office, warehouse, and lumberyard.
The successful candidate will be an accountable, results-driven leader who can build a strong team, manage competing priorities, and make sound decisions that support the long-term success of the Elma location and ProEdge Building Solutions.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesLeadership and Team Management
- Recruit, hire, train, develop, and retain qualified employees.
- Provide clear direction, coaching, feedback, and ongoing support to team members.
- Establish performance expectations and hold employees accountable for meeting company standards.
- Promote teamwork, open communication, personal responsibility, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct regular employee check-ins and assist with performance reviews and development plans.

Branch Operations
- Oversee the daily operations of the Elma location.
- Maintain an active leadership presence in the office, sales area, warehouse, and lumberyard.
- Ensure work is assigned appropriately and completed accurately, safely, and on time.
- Coordinate staffing, scheduling, deliveries, receiving, order fulfillment, and yard activity.
- Improve workflow, resource utilization, productivity, and communication across departments.
- Identify operational bottlenecks and implement practical solutions.
- Maintain high standards for branch appearance, organization, cleanliness, and security.
- Ensure company equipment, vehicles, facilities, and other assets are properly maintained and used responsibly.
Sales and Business Growth
- Develop and implement sales strategies that support branch revenue, gross-profit, and market-share goals.
- Establish, communicate, and monitor sales expectations for the branch and individual team members.
- Review sales activity, open orders, quotes, customer follow-ups, and key performance indicators.
- Coach the sales team on customer service, product knowledge, follow-up, estimating, and relationship development.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with contractors, agricultural customers, homeowners, vendors, and community partners.
- Identify opportunities to expand existing accounts and develop new business.
- Support the sales team in resolving complicated orders, pricing concerns, product questions, and customer issues.
- Promote customer retention and long-term loyalty through dependable service and consistent follow-through.
- Represent ProEdge professionally within the local business community.
Customer and Vendor Relations
- Ensure customers receive prompt, knowledgeable, and professional service.
- Assist with resolving escalated customer concerns in a fair and timely manner.
- Develop lasting relationships with key customers and actively seek feedback.
- Maintain productive relationships with vendors and supplier representatives.
- Work with leadership and purchasing personnel to address availability, quality, pricing, and service concerns.
- Negotiate within assigned authority to obtain favorable pricing, terms, and service.
- Protect company relationships while making decisions that support profitability and customer satisfaction.
Financial Management
- Manage the branch budget and control operating expenses.
- Monitor sales, gross margin, payroll, inventory, overhead, and other financial performance measures.
- Review profit-and-loss information and use financial data to guide decisions.
- Identify and implement appropriate cost-control and profit-improvement measures.
- Ensure purchasing and staffing decisions align with established budgets and branch needs.
- Monitor accounts receivable and assist with the resolution of overdue accounts, billing concerns, and credit-related issues.
- Approve purchases and expenses within assigned authority.
- Maintain responsible financial practices and safeguard company assets.
Inventory Management
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels based on sales activity, seasonal demand, and customer needs.
- Monitor inventory turnover, aging stock, shortages, and excess inventory.
- Ensure products are received, stored, handled, and recorded accurately.
- Oversee cycle counts, physical inventory procedures, and inventory adjustments.
- Investigate discrepancies and implement corrective measures.
- Minimize shrinkage, damage, waste, and avoidable inventory loss.
- Review the branch’s product mix and recommend changes based on demand, profitability, and market trends.
- Coordinate with other ProEdge locations when transferring or sourcing inventory.
Merchandising and Pricing
- Ensure products are priced accurately and in accordance with company expectations.
- Review product costs, margins, competitive conditions, and market trends.
- Help maintain an organized, professional, and customer-friendly sales environment.
- Ensure displays, signage, product placement, and promotional materials are current and effective.
- Protect company margins while maintaining a competitive market position.
- Work with leadership and sales personnel to identify promotional and merchandising opportunities.
Performance Management and Reporting
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators, sales goals, and operational benchmarks.
- Review branch performance regularly and communicate results to company leadership.
- Analyze results and identify the factors contributing to performance gaps.
- Develop and implement corrective action plans when goals are not being achieved.
- Maintain accurate operational, sales, inventory, staffing, and financial records.
- Prepare reports and updates as requested by company leadership.
- Follow up consistently on open assignments, customer issues, action items, and improvement initiatives.
Strategic Planning
- Develop short- and long-term plans for branch growth, profitability, and operational improvement.
- Identify market opportunities, competitive risks, and changing customer needs.
- Recommend staffing, inventory, facility, equipment, and process improvements.
- Collaborate with company leadership on organization-wide goals and strategic initiatives.
- Translate company objectives into clear branch-level priorities and action plans.
- Help position the Elma location for sustainable, long-term success.
Safety and Compliance
- Enforce company policies, operating procedures, and safety requirements.
- Promote a strong safety culture and address unsafe behavior or conditions immediately.
- Ensure employees receive necessary training and use required personal protective equipment.
- Maintain compliance with applicable workplace, employment, transportation, and operational requirements.
- Ensure workplace incidents, injuries, property damage, and safety concerns are documented and reported promptly.
- Lead by example in matters of safety, ethics, professionalism, and integrity.

Required QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor’s degree in business, management, construction management, or a related field is preferred.
- Relevant industry and leadership experience may be considered in place of formal education.
Experience
- Five or more years of proven leadership or management experience, preferably in a lumberyard, building-materials business, construction-related organization, retail operation, or similar environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing employees, operations, sales, inventory, and financial performance.
- Experience developing teams and improving business results is strongly preferred.

- Strong knowledge of lumber, building materials, construction practices, or a related industry.

Physical and Work Requirements
This position operates in an office, retail, warehouse, and outdoor lumberyard environment. Job duties may require:

Compensation and Benefits
ProEdge Building Solutions offers a competitive compensation package consisting of a base salary plus commission. Compensation will be based on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and demonstrated results.
Sales, gross-profit, operational, and other performance expectations will be established for this position, and the General Manager will be expected to meet or exceed those goals.
