This role sits within Procyon Tax, our in-house tax division. OVERVIEW
The Tax Manager plays a central role within Procyon Tax, overseeing the preparation and review of a broad range of tax returns while delivering proactive tax planning, researching complex tax matters, and supervising a small team of accounting professionals. This role requires deep knowledge of tax issues affecting privately held and owner-managed businesses, as well as individuals with complex tax situations, including trusts and estates. The Tax Manager partners closely with financial advisors and the broader Procyon team to identify planning opportunities and deliver integrated advice across a client's full financial picture. The ideal candidate is technically rigorous and detail oriented, communicates complex tax concepts clearly to clients and colleagues, and thrives leading a team through a demanding compliance calendar.
QUALIFICATIONS
- CPA license required.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of recent public accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of taxation for individuals, corporations, S corporations, partnerships, nonprofits, trusts, and estates.
- Demonstrated understanding of both small business operations and complex tax planning strategies.
- Experience preparing and reviewing complex business, individual, estate, and trust tax returns.
- Experience with QuickBooks and professional tax software (UltraTax preferred).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Prior experience supervising or mentoring staff is preferred.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Tax Compliance & Review
- Prepare and review individual, business, nonprofit, estate, and trust tax returns.
- Review staff work for technical accuracy and compliance with federal and state requirements.
- Manage multiple engagements simultaneously, ensuring quality standards and timely completion throughout the compliance calendar.
Tax Planning & Advisory
- Prepare and review tax projections and develop proactive tax planning strategies for clients.
- Analyze financial statements to identify tax planning opportunities for closely held businesses, business owners, and individuals.
- Partner with financial advisors and the planning team to integrate tax strategy into the broader client relationship.
Technical Research & Firm Expertise
- Research complex federal and state tax issues and document conclusions to support client recommendations.
- Monitor tax law changes and keep the firm informed of developments affecting clients and internal processes.
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise, mentor, and manage a team of 3-4 staff accountants.
- Provide ongoing coaching and technical training to build depth and consistency across the team.
- Establish workflow priorities and monitor capacity to ensure deadlines are met without compromising quality.
Client Communication
- Communicate directly with clients regarding tax planning, tax compliance, and complex tax matters.
- Translate technical tax concepts into clear, actionable guidance for clients and internal partners.

Location: Sparta, New Jersey
Travel: 10% of the time for internal firm events
Full / Part-time: Full Time
Hours Per Week: 40 hours, minimum
Hours: 8:30am-5pm-tax season hours will vary
Salary: $135-150K Bonus
