Job Title: Exhibit Fabricator
SUMMARY
Exhibit Fabricators create one-of-a-kind interactive exhibits for museums and various institutions across the country. As part of the Fabrication group, an Exhibit Fabricator is responsible for constructing exhibits from initial prototypes to completed installations, improving existing exhibits, and supporting their installation. The position requires both collaborative work within project teams as well as independent work. The ability to work from schematics, shop drawings, or verbal descriptions is essential, along with a strong willingness to work within project constraints. The position reports to the Head of Fabrication and works closely with exhibit developers, engineers, and project management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Execution: Consistently deliver high-quality exhibit construction across multiple projects with minimal supervision, including carpentry, mechanical system integration, and interactivity features.
- Solutions/Idea Generation: Regularly implement practical and innovative building strategies, creatively integrating technologies such as motors, sensors, and other mechanical systems into exhibit designs.
- Facilities/Institutional Support: Contribute to operations, including shop maintenance, exhibit maintenance, material ordering, and equipment management.
- Flexibility: Adapt to project constraints with proactive solutions. Comfortable and productive across a variety of project stages, from prototypes to fully interactive, high-fidelity exhibits.
- Judgement: Make timely construction and maintenance decisions, showing strong creative discernment around materials, forms, and processes. Be proactive in integrating interactive elements (touchscreens, motion sensors, etc.) into exhibits.
- Collaboration: Work effectively with team members and other departments to ensure smooth fabrication and delivery. Help incorporate mechanical systems such as pneumatic, hydraulic, or motorized components into exhibits for a dynamic visitor experience.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in engineering, design, or fabrication.
- Minimum five years’ prior fabrication/assembly/construction experience. Experience working with wooden exhibit components, wood furnishings/cabinetry, metal welding, and fabrication of interactive exhibits is a must.
- Advanced shop knowledge of wood, metal, plastic fabrication, including prototyping, CNC routing, mechanical systems integration, and working with various production methods.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of production woodworking, including CNC routed panels, frameless construction, laminate & veneer work, and basic wood finishing.
- Strong teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively at all organizational levels.
- Ability to work independently, managing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent time management and resource utilization, balancing interactivity development and material efficiency within project timelines and budgets.
- Interest in science, education, and technology is a plus.
