Senior Controls Engineer – ABB DCS (Power Generation)

About the Role
Process Automation & Control, Inc. is seeking a highly experienced Senior Controls Engineer with expertise in ABB Distributed Control Systems (DCS) to support critical projects within power generation facilities. This position involves designing, configuring, upgrading, maintaining, and troubleshooting ABB DCS platforms across both modern and legacy systems.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring reliable, efficient, and compliant control system operations while supporting plant safety, operational uptime, and process optimization.
This is a hands-on position suited for an individual who thrives in both office engineering and field service environments and is comfortable working within industrial power generation facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, implement, and commission ABB DCS systems, including ABB 800xA and Symphony Plus platforms, for power generation applications.
- Develop and modify control logic, operator graphics, alarms, historian interfaces, and SCADA functionality.
- Support control system migrations, upgrades, integrations, and modernization projects.
- Understand and implement customer design standards, including control strategies, tag naming conventions, graphics development standards, I/O layouts, and documentation requirements.
- Develop and optimize control strategies for power plant processes.
- Collaborate with project teams to define, design, and execute control system scope of work.
- Perform field commissioning, troubleshooting, startup support, functional testing, and system validation activities.
- Create and maintain project documentation, including logic diagrams, operator interfaces, training materials, test procedures, and as-built drawings.
- Support compliance with customer safety requirements, cybersecurity standards, and applicable industry regulations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited university preferred.
- Equivalent extensive field experience (10 years) combined with relevant industry certifications and training will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum of 8 years of controls engineering experience, preferably within power generation, utilities, combined-cycle plants, or other heavy industrial/process environments.
- Significant hands-on experience with ABB 800xA and Symphony Plus systems.
- Strong understanding of power plant operations, process control fundamentals, PID loop tuning, interlocks, and industrial cybersecurity best practices.
- Experience performing field commissioning, troubleshooting control system faults and alarms, functional testing of field devices, and executing turnover packages.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with customers, operators, technicians, and project teams.
Physical Requirements
This position may require standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, lifting equipment up to 25 pounds, working in industrial environments, and traveling to customer facilities.
