Position Summary:

The Shop Fabrication Operator plays a critical role in in the manufacturing process by accurately operating machinery such as band saws and drill presses to cut, shape and prepare metal components for assembly. This position ensures that all fabricated parts meet precise specifications and quality standards, contributing directly to the efficiency and success of production operations. The operator will work closely with production teams to interpret blueprints and job orders, ensuring that each piece is fabricated correctly and safely. Attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols are paramount to prevent defects and maintain a smooth workflow in the shop, supporting the overall manufacturing goals of the company. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate band saws and drill presses to cut and shape metal parts according to specifications.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and job orders to determine the correct fabrication process.
  • Perform routine maintenance and safety checks on equipment to ensure optimal operation.
  • Inspect finished parts for quality and accuracy, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to all safety and company policies.
  • Set up rollers to flatten or roll material to a specific radius.
  • Operate grinders or sanders to remove excess material/burrs from surfaces.
  • Use basic hand tools including but not limited to an electric drill, air ratchet, wrenches, screwdrivers, and rivet guns.
  • Spot welding.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in operating fabrication equipment including band saws, drill presses, rollers, grinders, sanders, and spot welders.

Blueprint and Print Reading

  • Accurately reads and interprets blueprints, drawings, work instructions, and job orders. 
  • Understands dimensions, tolerances, and fabrication specifications. 
  • Applies blueprint information to produce parts that meet customer requirements.

  • Consistently produces parts that meet quality standards and specifications. 
  • Performs inspections and measurements to verify accuracy. 
  • Identifies defects and takes corrective action when necessary. 

Attention to Detail

  • Maintains accuracy when measuring, cutting, drilling, grinding, and forming materials. 
  • Ensures proper material identification and job completion requirements. 
  • Recognizes inconsistencies and addresses them before they impact production. 

Safety Awareness

  • Follows all company safety policies and procedures. 
  • Uses required personal protective equipment (PPE). 
  • Maintains awareness of workplace hazards and contributes to a safe work environment. 

Productivity and Efficiency

  • Completes work assignments within established production schedules. 
  • Effectively manages time and priorities. 
  • Minimizes material waste and equipment downtime. 

Equipment Care and Maintenance

  • Conducts routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment. 
  • Reports equipment issues promptly. 
  • Maintains tools and machinery in safe operating condition.

  • Identifies fabrication challenges and determines practical solutions. 
  • Makes appropriate adjustments to equipment and processes. 
  • Seeks assistance when issues exceed authority or expertise.

  • Works effectively with supervisors, welders, assemblers, and other production personnel. 
  • Communicates job status, quality concerns, and production needs. 
  • Supports team goals and assists coworkers when needed.

  • Takes ownership of assigned work and follows tasks through to completion. 
  • Adheres to company policies, procedures, and work standards.

  • Understands fabrication processes and material characteristics. 
  • Uses measuring devices accurately, including tape measures, squares, and calipers. 
  • Demonstrates strong hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.

Skills & Qualifications:

 

  • Proven experience operating band saws and drill presses in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures related to machine operation.

Physical Requirements: 

  • The employee is regularly required to speak, hear, and sit for extended periods of time. Frequently the employees are required to use their hands and fingers to handle or feel, as well as reach with hands and arms. Occasionally the employee is required to stand and walk, lift or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities include near, far, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Education and Experience:

 

High School diploma or equivalent
