BIG Engineers is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our growing team in California. Candidates must be located within commuting distance of San Diego or Los Angeles.
This is an excellent opportunity for a licensed professional with strong design expertise in wood, steel and concrete structures to work on high-impact projects including commercial buildings, residential developments, mixed-use complexes, and seismic retrofits across the state.
You will play a key role in delivering safe, innovative, and code-compliant structural designs while collaborating with architects, contractors, and owners in California’s dynamic construction environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the structural design and analysis of wood, steel and concrete buildings projects from concept through construction.
- Prepare detailed calculations, drawings, specifications, and reports for permitting and construction.
- Perform seismic analysis and design per California Building Code (CBC) and ASCE 7 requirements.
- Conduct site visits, structural assessments, and construction observation.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
- Review shop drawings and respond to RFIs during construction.
- Ensure all designs meet current California codes, standards, and client requirements.
- This role requires visits to project and active construction sites to perform structural observations and assessments.
Qualifications (Must-Have)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Minimum 8 years of progressive structural design experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in California required.
- Structural Engineer (SE) license in California strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated design experience in steel and concrete structures (both new construction and retrofit projects).
- Proficiency in structural analysis software (ETABS, SAP2000, RISA-3D, STAAD.Pro) and AutoCAD/Revit.
- Thorough knowledge of California Building Code, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, and seismic design principles.
- Strong communication and project management skills.
- Valid California driver’s license and ability to travel within the state as needed.
