Assistant Director – Early Education and Care (Massachusetts)
The Assistant Director supports the Center Director in overseeing daily operations, supervising staff, and ensuring full compliance with regulations set by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC). This role helps maintain a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment for all children.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
Assist with daily center operations, including opening and closing procedures, maintaining EEC-required staff-to-child ratios, and ensuring a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment in accordance with EEC standards.
Staff Supervision
Support hiring, onboarding, training, and supervision of educators. Help ensure all staff meet EEC teacher qualification requirements and complete ongoing professional development. Assist in staff scheduling and performance monitoring.
Curriculum & Compliance
Ensure implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with Massachusetts guidelines. Maintain compliance with all EEC licensing regulations, including health, safety, and documentation requirements. Support readiness for licensing visits and audits.
Parent & Community Relations
Conduct center tours, support enrollment and waitlist management, and maintain strong, professional communication with families. Address parent concerns in a timely and respectful manner.
Administrative Duties
Maintain accurate child and staff records as required by EEC. Assist with budgeting, purchasing, and tracking supplies. Support use of child care management systems (e.g., attendance, billing, documentation).
Leadership Presence
Serve as Administrator on Site when required and assume full responsibility for center operations in the Director’s absence, in compliance with EEC regulations.
Qualifications (Massachusetts Requirements)
Education & Certification
Must meet EEC requirements for Director l-II Certification (or be eligible), which typically includes:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field
- Required coursework in child development and program administration
Experience
- Minimum of experience required by EEC for Director II qualification (typically including teaching and supervisory experience in an early childhood setting)
Certifications
- Current CPR and First Aid certification
- EEC background record check (BRC) clearance
- Completion of required EEC professional development hours
Skills
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills; familiarity with EEC regulations and child care management software preferred.
Working Conditions
This position includes both classroom and administrative responsibilities. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for family events, staff meetings, or trainings.
Pay: $40,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
