Job Overview

Priority Patient Transport is hiring Part-Time Flex EMT-Basic providers for our Staunton location. This role offers flexible scheduling across the following shifts: 7a–5p, 8a–6p, and 9a–7p.

Pay Range: $17.50–$21.00 per hour

Applicants must hold a current Virginia EMT certification or be eligible for reciprocity prior to hire.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have an approved driving record (or approval by company insurance underwriters)
  • Must have a clean criminal background history
  • Must pass a 10-panel drug screening
  • Must hold a current CPR certification
  • Must hold a current Virginia EMT-Basic certification (or be eligible for reciprocity)

The EMT-Basic must demonstrate competency in handling emergencies utilizing basic life support (BLS) equipment and skills in accordance with the U.S. Department of Transportation National EMS Education Standards for EMTs, including the ability to:

  • Verbally communicate in person, via telephone, and telecommunications using the English language
  • Hear spoken information from coworkers, patients, physicians, and dispatchers, and recognize common emergency scene sounds
  • Lift, carry, and balance up to 125 pounds (250 with assistance), at a height of 33 inches, and a distance of 10 feet
  • Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions
  • Accurately document patient information in prescribed formats
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills to perform all tasks related to safe, quality patient care
  • Bend, stoop, crawl, and walk on uneven surfaces
  • Meet minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle within the state

Description of Tasks
  • Receive dispatch calls, verbally acknowledge, identify the most expeditious route, and observe traffic ordinances
  • Park safely upon arrival and perform scene size-up to determine safety, mechanism of injury/illness, and number of patients
  • Take precautions to protect patients and bystanders; use body substance isolation techniques to prevent contamination
  • Inspect for medical identification emblems, bracelets, or cards that provide emergency medical information
  • Assess patients to determine the nature and extent of illness or injury; provide emergency care based on findings
  • Perform EMT-Basic skills including airway management, ventilation, suctioning, cardiac resuscitation, and AED use
  • Provide prehospital emergency care for trauma, shock, hemorrhage, immobilization, and splinting
  • Manage medical patients including childbirth, cardiac, respiratory, diabetic, allergic, behavioral, and poisoning emergencies
  • Perform interventions and assist patients with prescribed medications (e.g., nitroglycerin, epinephrine auto-injectors, and inhalers)
  • Administer oxygen, oral glucose, and activated charcoal as appropriate
  • Reassure patients and bystanders by working in a confident, efficient manner
  • Function effectively in varied environmental conditions (light/dark, heat/cold, moisture)
  • Operate safely and efficiently under stressful situations
  • Perform extrication as necessary using proper techniques and equipment for safe patient removal
  • Handle crime scenes and prehospital deaths in accordance with regulations, preserving property and evidence
  • Lift and move patients safely into the ambulance and provide ongoing care en route
  • Determine the most appropriate facility for patient transport and communicate findings and treatments to receiving staff
  • Observe patients during transport and provide continuous care per medical control or protocol
  • Complete accurate and detailed written and verbal patient care reports
  • Dispose of contaminated materials, decontaminate vehicle interiors, and restock supplies
  • Maintain ambulance readiness, including cleanliness, fuel, fluid levels, and tire pressure
  • Check all medical equipment for readiness and complete daily Truck Check-Off forms
  • Attend required continuing education and refresher training programs
  • Maintain current CPR and EMT-Basic certifications (renew prior to expiration)
  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts in proper uniform
  • Communicate professionally with supervisors, coworkers, dispatch, patients, families, and facility staff
  • Respond to transports promptly, efficiently, and safely
  • Meet all qualifications within the functional job analysis for the EMT-Basic role
