Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory currently uses two (2) large, stored energy, Motor-Generators, each generator rated at 450 MVA, to supply power to the various experimental loads in support of NSTX-U operations. Each motor-generator (MG) is driven by a 15,000 HP electrical induction motor rated at 13.8 KV. The subsystem for the MG consists of cycloconverters, excitation systems, liquid rheostats, instrumentation and controls, circuit breakers, switchgear, hydraulic and lubrication systems, compressors, pumps, heat exchangers and cooling water systems.The field coil power conversion (FCPC) system consists of multi-megawatt thyristor rectifiers and IGBT H-Bridge amplifiers, current limiting reactors, isolation and grounding switches, hardwired control systems and various protection, measurement and monitoring systems.

This position is for the support of the MG systems. 

 

The electrical systems technician for PPPL engineering will provide support for all maintenance, testing, repairs, upgrades, installations, modifications and troubleshooting of the system assigned and their associated subsystems.

Responsibilities

Core Duties: 

  • Provides technical support as a technician for NSTX-U operations and for daily/monthly/annual maintenance of subsystems.
  • During maintenance periods, perform maintenance on the system assigned.
  • Supports the maintenance and real-time troubleshooting.
  • Records and documents system performance data in accordance with established PPPL procedures and guidelines.
  • Assists in obtaining parts for emergency repairs, maintains an up-to-date knowledge of quantities and location of the extensive spares inventory at D-site.
  • Follows safe practices such as: being aware of workplace hazards/job specific hazards, following the JHA (Job Hazard Analysis) and having relevant up to date work permits.
  • Keeps training current, such as: Hoisting and rigging, Confined space, Fall protection, Cyber security, GET (General Employee Training), EUT (Electric Utilization Training) and NEC (National Electric Code).

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  • Technical institute or associate degree with 2 years of relevant experience; or no degree and 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with methods of control of hazardous energy (lock out/tag out).
  • Experience with MG operations/maintenance highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings including power system one-line diagrams, circuit schematics and control wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to troubleshoot analog electronic circuits including op amps, comparators and logic gates.
  • Ability to effectively use electronic test equipment for troubleshooting such as oscilloscopes, signal generators and multimeters.
  • Skill in soldering for making repairs to electronic circuit boards.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to work in awkward positions, at elevated heights, confined spaces, bend, climb, lift and/or move heavy objects up to 50lbs.

Working Conditions: 

  • This position works in an industrial environment; onsite position, typical hours are 7 AM to 3:30 PM Monday - Friday. May be asked to work additional hours into 2nd shift or weekends depending on need or for emergencies.
