What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Compliance Inspector position at Prince William County Government?
Prince William County is looking for an experienced Business Tax Inspector to perform analytical and technical work in the inspection and auditing of businesses with the focus to identify unregistered businesses.
About This Role:
As a Business Tax Inspector, you will:
- Plan and conduct on-site inspections of business/commercial locations;
- Conduct routine audits of various state and local tax documents and federal tax schedules to determine taxability and ensure compliance with local business tax laws;
- Research and analyze factors to determine appropriate business property values, gross receipts and tax liability;
- Determine the appropriate course of action required to bring resolution to site-inspection cases not in compliance;
- Prepare formal written reports, work papers and spreadsheets of on-site inspection cases;
Analyze, review and initiate appropriate actions to reconcile and bring resolution to complex tax cases; - Analyze and adjust erroneous gross receipts and reconcile amended returns.
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 2 years of related experience in business inspection.
Preferences:
The successful candidate will have:
- Associate’s degree preferred with major course work in business or accounting;
- 3-4 years’ experience in business tax inspections, business tax assessment or related activities, preferably in the public sector;
- Ability to analyze and prepare various reports;
- Ability to examine and analyze tax assets and liabilities;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the general public and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Working knowledge of the Business, Professional and Occupational License tax, Business Personal Property tax and other local business taxes;
- general knowledge of the principles and practices in developing and implementing tax options and solutions;
- general knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting and auditing and the knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of problem solving.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver’s license. Must pass DMV background check.
Work Schedule: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Mon – Fri.
Hiring Salary Range: $25.44 - $36.98
