Applicants should either possess or be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and both Emissions and State Inspector’s Licenses within 12 months of employment. Candidates with a CDL are eligible for a hiring bonus; for those without a CDL, the County offers paid training to obtain one. Additionally, candidates are required to provide their own mechanical hand tools. The selection process includes a physical health and Police Department background check encompassing fingerprints, a credit check, and employment verification. This position is designated as essential and may require you to report to work outside of normal working hours. HIRING BONUS:
This position offers a hiring bonus of $3,000 for candidates who possess a Class A or Class B CDL, which will be paid in two equal installments. The first installation of $1,500.00 will be paid after you have completed 90 days of employment. The remaining $1,500.00 will be disbursed upon successful completion of the probationary period. About This Role:
Successful candidates will have the ability to independently diagnose and repair County vehicles, hydraulic drive units, grounds maintenance, and small equipment using electronic scan tools, equipment, and machinery. Inside and outside work is required, and knowledge of computers and electronic data entry is preferred.
In this position, you will diagnose, adjust, repair, and service a broad spectrum of air compressors, pump systems, and truck hydraulic systems You will perform advanced mechanical repairs, overhauls, and maintenance of specialized equipment, as well as fabrication or servicing of assemblies such as single- and two-speed rear axles, multi-speed transmissions, and hydraulic, compressed air, vacuum, and electrical control systems.
You will also perform preventive maintenance tasks on vehicles and equipment—inspecting, diagnosing, and locating mechanical issues. The role requires operating diverse shop machinery, precision instruments, and specialized tools, including dynamometers, valve refacing equipment, micrometers, lathes, and alignment gauges.
You will diagnose and repair computer-aided systems—fuel injection, emission sensors, and anti-skid brake systems using advanced diagnostic tools. The position also includes conducting state safety and emissions inspections for County vehicles, requisitioning parts and materials via computerized systems, and maintaining detailed service records and files of shop operations, equipment, and supplies.
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 2 years of related experience.
Preferences:
A. Experience with diagnosing, adjusting, repairing, and servicing a wide variety of air compressors, pump apparatus, and truck hydraulic systems.
B. Experience performing skilled mechanical repairs, overhauls, and maintaining specialized equipment.
C. Experience with overhauls, fabrications, and services assemblies and accessories such as single and two-speed rear axles, multi-speed transmissions, and hydraulic compressed air, vacuum, and electric controls, systems, and components.
D. Experience performing preventative maintenance on vehicles and/or equipment to include inspecting, diagnosing, and locating mechanical problems in County vehicles and equipment.
E. Experience with various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools, and devices such as dynamometers, boring bars, valve refacing and reseating equipment, micrometers, dial gauges, wheel alignment gauges, clutch cover assembly devices, power saws, grinders, drill presses, and lathes.
F. Experience in diagnosing and repairing computer-aided systems such as fuel injection, anti-skid brakes, emission, and engine sensors using computerized equipment.
G. Experience conducting State safety inspections and State Emissions inspections.
H. Experience with the purchase of parts and materials used in the repair of equipment via computerized equipment.
Special Requirements:
- Must pass a Police Background and physical to include drug testing and have a clean driving record.
- Must have a Virginia State Inspector and a Licensed Emissions Inspector Certification or the ability to obtain within one year of start date.
- Must have a Class A or B CDL or the ability to obtain one within 12 months.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds regularly; up to 80 pounds applicable.
Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours a week. This position is considered essential and must report to work in emergencies, which may be after hours.
Hiring Salary Range:
The hiring range for this position is $25.44 - $38.00.
