Introduction

Join Virginia Cooperative Extension – Prince William as our Environmental and Natural Resources Educator. This position supports the Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) program and advances the County’s environmental goals through education, outreach, and stewardship.

About This Role

As an Education and Outreach Specialist, you will:

  • Lead the BEST Lawns/Urban Nutrient Management Plan (UNMP) program, including participant recruitment, site visits, plan development, and volunteer training.
  • Lead the annual well water sampling program.
  • Collaborate with the Master Gardener Coordinator to train, schedule, and evaluate volunteers.
  • Design and deliver educational programs on agriculture, natural resources, and environmental topics for youth, adults, and local government staff.
  • Support school and community gardens and stormwater education events.
  • Respond to public inquiries on horticulture, native/invasive plants, wildlife conflicts, and sustainable practices.
  • Contribute to outreach strategy, digital resource development, and grant-supported programming.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree or coursework in agriculture, environmental science, or related field.
  • Experience in program delivery, public speaking, volunteer coordination, and community engagement.
  • Knowledge of soils, turf, nutrient management, native/invasive species, and human-wildlife interactions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and digital communication tools.
  • Ability to translate scientific concepts into accessible, engaging content.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and 2 years of related experience.

Schedule Requirements

This is a full-time position that primarily works Monday through Friday during normal business hours, with occasional evening and weekend work to support educational programs and community events.

Special Requirements

  • Must complete Department of Conservation and Recreation Urban Nutrient Management coursework and pass the certified planner test within 18 months of hire.
  • While much of the work is performed in an office environment, there will be times the incumbent will work outside which may include hot, cold and/or wet environments.

ENTRY SALARY RANGE: $26.50 – $33.00 Hourly (Commensurate with experience and qualifications)
