The Prince George’s County Police Department is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill various Telecommunications Call Taker, (Public Safety Emergency Call Taker I/II) grade P14/15 positions in the Records Management Division/Teletype Unit.

  • This is NOT a 911 dispatcher position*

About This Position

This is an entry level Telecommunications position with various duties and responsibilities required by the Prince George’s County Police Department, State of Maryland, N.C.I.C Quality Control and FBI mandates. Work assignments require knowledge of N.C.I.C., NLETS entries, impounds, and repossessions. The incumbent work assignments also require knowledge of general orders, departmental rules and regulations. The incumbents in these positions support the Records Management Division. The incumbents in these positions are authorized to carry out those duties and responsibilities in accordance with the established performance standards and is subject to reporting and justifying task outcomes to those above him/her in the department‘s chain of command.

Today, the Prince George's County Police Department serves over 900,000 residents and has an authorized strength of 1800 officers and 300 civilians.

Examples of Work

  • Requires the ability to operate with a high degree of competence with the following systems: METERS. NCIC, NJETS, CJIS, RMS, PGPD, Warrants Systems and CAD.
  • Receives information via telephone/telex/fax from various sources.
  • Must qualify for CN1 recertification once every 2 years in order to maintain NCIC currency.
  • Check vehicles for stolen and accuracy using the VIN Assist system as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year practical work experience to include one (1) year experience demonstrating the use of Windows-based computer programs.

Additional Eligibility Criteria

Candidates deemed as meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to complete and pass an online Call Taker/9-1-1 examination. Applicants who have previously taken and passed the exam on or after 8/1/2024 will not be required to re-test. Previous passing test scores will be applied.

Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:

  • Meet all certification standards as deemed necessary by the respective agency.
  • Comply with established quality improvement procedures, meet case review requirements, and maintain Quality Assurance Scores as established by the agency or industry standards.
  • Satisfactorily complete all components of the Practical and Academic Public Safety Call Taker I/II training program by achieving a minimum score set by the agency or as established by industry standards on all quizzes, examinations, and practical evaluations.
  • Complete the Maryland State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) CN1 training course. Must obtain and maintain NCIC - CN1 certification by achieving a minimum passing score on all course examinations.
  • Be willing to work assigned shift work position (days/evenings/weekends/holidays).
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings.
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.

General Plan Information

The Prince George’s County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.

A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.

Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). If you are only adding the stepchildren or child(ren) of a same-sex spouse, you will need to submit a marriage certificate. You will also need to submit the birth certificate of the child(ren) and your spouse must be listed as a parent.

The premiums for health benefits are deducted on a pre-tax basis with the exception of Long-Term Disability, Extra Life Insurance and Voluntary Benefits (Short-Term Disability, Whole Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Cancer Indemnity, Hospital Indemnity Protection, Accident Indemnity Plan, Supplemental Dental and Group Legal Services).

New employees must enroll in the County’s health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.

The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.

After enrolling in the County’s benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
