The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Transit Operator-A grade A11 position in the Office of Transportation/Senior Transportation.

About the Position

This is skilled craft work involving the operation of commercial passenger vehicles, multi-passenger vans, and ancillary equipment (e.g., wheelchair lifts and two-way radios) to transport customers with special needs, including senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, to assigned destinations. Paratransit routes are primarily followed; however, fixed routes may be assigned as needed. Performance is evaluated based on the safe and efficient operation of vehicles, the safe transport of passengers, and the quality of customer service provided.

The selected individual is expected to consistently demonstrate a professional, courteous, pleasant, and helpful demeanor when interacting with the public and must be able to maintain composure in stressful situations. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with regular exposure to the elements.

The position requires the ability to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 pounds on a regular basis and to wear and maintain the required uniform and personal protective or safety equipment. Physical requirements include the ability to sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or operate objects, tools, and controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to safely operate light- to heavy-duty County vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) in excess of 26,000 pounds.

Employees of the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) are designated as Essential Employees and are required to participate in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program, respond during natural and human-caused disasters, and support special operations and activities as assigned. Essential employees are expected to report for duty or remain at work when other employees are granted Administrative Leave.

About The Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.
  • Operates passenger vehicles in a safe manner, complying with Motor Vehicle and Transit Local, State, and Federal regulations.
  • Conducts routine bus and van inspections of assigned vehicle before/after use according to safety and operating procedures.
  • Maintains communication by radio with Dispatch and Transit Service Coordinators to report transit vehicle breakdowns, accidents, interruptions in service or other information vital to maintaining efficient transit operations.
  • Provides customer service and courteous interactions with passengers by responding to inquiries about schedules, routes, fares, connections to other routes and services, ridership promotions and transit service policies.
  • Assists passengers boarding/disembarking when necessary.
  • Assists with securing disabled wheelchair patrons.
  • Performs daily service/maintenance and maintains the cleanliness of vehicle exterior/interior throughout the shift.
  • Participates as an Essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities.
  • Performs other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

  • Graduation from high school or a G.E.D.
  • One (1) year of transit operation experience with direct customer service experience.
  • Possession of a valid Class B or C commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger airbrake or mandatory passenger endorsements
An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must (where applicable):
  • Must possess, maintain, and submit a copy of Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air-brake and passenger endorsement together with a current DOT physical certification card.
  • Must submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration driving record.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors. 
  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.  
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties. 
  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings. 
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee in the department's Snow and Ice Control Program and during other emergency/special activities as assigned. This position is essential. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.

Salary : $53,217 - $66,105
