The Prince George’s County Department of Corrections is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Staff Counselor I (Counselor I), grade G18 position, in the Office of The Director.
About the Position
This is entry level professional work in providing individual, couple, family and group counseling to employees in need of mental health and supportive services. Additionally, the incumbent provides rapid mental health screening and response for face-to-face consultations, and conducts mental health and employee wellness training programs for departmental staff. Work is performed under close supervision of a higher-level Counselor or other designated position.
Please note - This is a Limited-Term Grant Funded Part-time contractual position with an hourly rate of $65.00 and without benefits. The grant ends on June 30, 2025. Possibility for grant to be renewed.
About the Agency
The Prince George's County Department of Corrections provides a safe, secure and humane environment for pre-trial and sentenced offenders. We also provide rehabilitative programs to inmates such as education, juvenile services, religious services, domestic violence, barber styling school, women's empowerment, substance abuse drug treatment, and community re-entry.
Provides individual, couple, family and group counseling to employees in need of mental health and supportive services.
Refers employees to outside services when appropriate and facilitates a continuum of care.
Maintains appropriate HIPPA compliant electronic case files for all clinical cases.
Participates in regular clinical supervision with Employee Support Unit Chief.
Conducts in-services training on mental health and employee wellness related issues.
Maintains confidentiality of all work performed.
Provides crisis intervention to prospective and current clients.
Clinical sessions will be conducted by the standards set forth by the MD State Board of Professional Counselors.
Clinical sessions will include diagnostic evaluation and assessment, treatment plans, and appropriate referrals when necessary.
Will participate with the CISM Peer Support Team and be available for crisis response.
Provides backup emergency psychological services to corrections department employees.
Counselors are on call 24 hours a day to provide an immediate response to specified departmental emergencies.
Incumbent will provide backup on-call assistance one weekend per month and when the ESU Chief is on leave.
Develops and delivers courses to department personnel. Topics include crisis intervention, abnormal psychology, domestic violence, and substance abuse.
Course material and instructor's presentation will be evaluated by the Training and Education Division.
Participates in relevant training regarding working with public safety personnel.
Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties that may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with this class of work.
Will participate annually in clinically relevant training to hone skills in working with corrections employees.
- Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy or other related fields with experience in counseling or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Social work, or Psychology with a minimum of 2,000 hours of supervised clinical experience in professional counseling.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Licensed Certified Social Worker- Clinical (LCSW-C)
- Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)
- Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LCMFT)
- Experience working in Public Safety.
- Experience working with individuals with a trauma history.
- Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, or other related behavioral health field with experience in providing counseling.
- Licensed clinical or licensed graduate certification in the State of Maryland.

Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:
- Be willing to work in a Correctional Facility.
- Possess and maintain a current status as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) or Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C).
- Obtain and remain current with NCIC certifications.
- Pass a thorough background investigation.
- Pass a drug screen and subsequent random drug screens.
- Be willing to workday/evening shifts and weekend hours and holidays.
- Pass a physical examination that includes TB testing.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Maintain clinical malpractice insurance with Prince George's County listed as an additional insured
- Be available and willing to respond to on-call behavioral health crisis.
