About the Position

The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill multiple permanent, full-time entry-level positions of Deputy Sheriff Private, grade W21. Prior experience is not required; however, candidates that are current students or recent graduates of an approved Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) accredited institution in the State of Maryland are also encouraged to apply.

About the Agency

The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff has been a vital link in the criminal justice system for more than 300 years, providing the citizens of Prince George’s County with professional, transparent, and effective law enforcement service. The Office of the Sheriff serves as the law enforcement arm of the courts, responding to domestic violence calls, processing warrants, civil papers, domestic violence peace and protective orders, Emergency Psychiatric Petition (E.P.S.) orders, and the execution of evictions.  The Office of the Sheriff is also responsible for court security, providing security and protection for visitors to our courthouses and securing courtrooms and holding areas. Deputies transport prisoners and are responsible for extraditing fugitives from other states.


  • Provide effective and efficient law enforcement services to the residents of Prince George's County
  • Perform general law enforcement and investigations controlling and serving warrants and/or extraditing persons wanted on criminal warrants
  • Transport prisoners to and from various institutions and courts throughout the State of Maryland and the United States
  • Arrest, detain and process prisoners that are in the custody of the Office of the Sheriff
  • Serve civil processes/summonses
  • Execute writs/court orders
  • Maintain security in the courtrooms of the Circuit and District Courts
  • Monitor prisoners in holding areas
  • Perform court related house evictions
  • Complete reports

 


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • High School diploma/graduate or possess a G.E.D.
  • At least 20 years and 6 months of age at the time of submitting an application (and be 21 years of age at time of graduation from the Police Academy)
  • Possess a valid driver's license and at least 6 months of post-license driving experience 
  • Pass all of the qualification factors listed in the Additional Information 
  • Applicants must pass a written test, an agility test, an oral examination, and be able to work shift work. 
  • Successfully pass a background investigation.


This position is designated "essential" and the incumbent must be willing to participate as a critical/essential employee during emergencies in the event of a natural or manmade disaster; or special activities/events. Essential employees are expected to report to work or remain at work when other County employees are granted administrative leave. Employees in this classification may be assigned to any of the three shifts to ensure 24-hour coverage to maintain the facility's security.


Preferred Qualifications
  • 60 college credit hours
  • Current student of an approved Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) accredited institution or if recent graduate, must possess certification from an approved MPCTC accredited institution

Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:


  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency. 

  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.

  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, etc.

  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. This position is an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.

Reasons for disqualification may include (but are not limited to) the following:
  • Previous disqualification for public safety positions within Prince George's County
  • Deception or falsification of information provided on application or other documents
  • Poor work history
  • Poor driving record, which includes suspended license/DWI/DUI
  • History or pattern of crimes (both reported and not reported); felony/misdemeanor conviction; illegal drug usage, possession, distribution, sale, or purchase
  • Testing positive on drug screening
  • Failure to meet physical and mental standards
  • Failure to present a professional appearance
  • Poor credit history
