Role Description The Survey Party Chief is a full-time, on-site role based in Sarasota, FL. This position leads field survey crews on transportation and infrastructure construction projects, ensuring that all survey work supports project plans, specifications, and schedule requirements. Daily responsibilities include planning and organizing survey activities, setting up and operating survey instruments, collecting and verifying field data, establishing control points, and performing construction layout for grading, utilities, structures, and roadways. The Survey Party Chief is expected to interpret project drawings and alignments, coordinate with project managers, engineers, and superintendents, and maintain accurate field notes and electronic records. The role also includes overseeing crew safety and productivity, troubleshooting survey issues in the field, and assisting with as-built surveys and quantity measurements for project documentation.
Qualifications
- Strong field surveying skills, including construction layout, establishing control, and performing topographic and as-built surveys.
- Proficiency with survey instruments such as total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, and digital levels, including basic troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, cross sections, alignments, and specifications for highway and heavy civil projects.
- Experience documenting survey work through accurate field notes, digital data collection, and coordination with office staff or survey technicians.
- Knowledge of safety practices and regulations on active construction sites, with a commitment to maintaining a safe work environment for the crew.
- Previous experience as a Survey Party Chief or lead surveyor on civil, transportation, or infrastructure projects is strongly preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or an associate degree in surveying, civil engineering technology, or a related field is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions, including standing, walking, and lifting as required by the role.
