The role often involves setup, adjustments, routine maintenance, and quality checks using measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
Key Responsibilities
- Precision measurement: Manual machinists must use precision instruments like micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and bore gauges to verify that finished products meet strict quality standards. This requires an exceptional level of accuracy, often to the thousandths of an inch.
- Shop mathematics: Machinists must be proficient in applying math, including geometry and trigonometry, to perform calculations for machine setup, scales, angles, and dimensions.
- Tooling selection and setup: Machinists must choose the correct cutting tools and fixtures for each job and set them up on the machine. This includes properly sharpening tools and preparing the workpiece for cutting.
- Machine operation: Expertise in setting up, operating, and monitoring a range of manual machines is fundamental. This includes lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders.
- Read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
- Operate manual lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other machine tools.
- Select and install appropriate cutting tools and fixtures.
- Measure and inspect finished components to ensure specifications are met.
- Perform routine maintenance on machines.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
- Proficiency with manual machining tools and equipment.
- Strong understanding of materials, cutting speeds, and feeds.
- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
