POSITION SUMMARY
The Infection Preventionist/Director of Staff Development is responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and maintaining the facility’s Infection Control Program and Employee Health Program, while also coordinating and providing staff orientation, mandatory in-services, training, and education. This role ensures compliance with CDC, OSHA, state, and federal regulations, educates employees on safe practices, assists with regulatory surveys, and promotes high-quality resident care through prevention and education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESInfection Prevention / Infection Control (Primary Function – 3 Days/Week)
- Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring the facility infection control program in accordance with CDC, OSHA, state, and federal regulations.
- Conduct routine rounds throughout the facility for surveillance, hand hygiene compliance, PPE use, and safe environmental practices.
- Maintain surveillance of residents and staff for healthcare-associated infections; assist in trend tracking and prepare monthly summaries for DON/Administrator.
- Assist the nursing department with care planning and precautions for isolated residents.
- Maintain updated reference materials and ensure infection control policies/procedures remain current.
- Ensure adequate PPE, isolation supplies, and sterilization/decontamination procedures are followed.
- Assist with proper disposal of biohazard waste, sharps, and contaminated materials.
- Participate in or provide documentation for regulatory surveys.
- Prepare written and oral reports related to infection control findings and corrective actions.
- Maintain confidential records of infections, exposures, and employee health information.
- Assist with TB testing, hepatitis B vaccination information, and exposure follow-up per facility policy.
- Participate in the Infection Control Committee and QAPI as required.
Staff Development & Education (Secondary Function – 2 Days/Week)
- Organize and conduct new employee orientation, including resident rights, infection control, safety, emergency procedures, and facility policies.
- Schedule, coordinate, and document required annual in-services and skills validations (OSHA, TB, bloodborne pathogens, etc.).
- Maintain complete and accurate records of staff orientation, competencies, and in-service attendance.
- Ensure in-service and training postings are communicated to staff.
- Assist with scheduling employee health screening and testing (pre-employment and annual).
- Document and coordinate required fire and disaster drills.
- Maintain educational supplies and inventories.
- Assist with recruitment and onboarding tasks as needed (posting positions, responding to applicants, contacting candidates).
ADMINISTRATIVE & COMMUNICATION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain accurate logs, documentation, training files, infection data, and health records.
- Prepare reports for the Administrator and DON.
- Maintain confidentiality of all protected resident and employee information.
- Promote positive communication, teamwork, and professional customer service.
- Participate in QAPI, safety meetings, survey readiness, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist with general office and clerical tasks as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by DON or Administrator.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current LVN or RN license in good standing in this state.
- Experience in long-term care preferred.
- Basic knowledge of infection control practices, standard/universal precautions, and resident care.
- Strong communication, computer, and organizational skills.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- CPR certification preferred.
- APIC training or certification preferred, but not required; facility will provide or support necessary education.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to move intermittently throughout the facility.
- Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 25 lbs and assist with emergency evacuations.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and computer use.
- Possible exposure to blood/body fluids with required PPE.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Indoor clinical and administrative setting with low to moderate noise.
- Must be able to work under stress, deadlines, and regulatory requirements.
