What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNC Programmer position at Primary Intel?
CNC Machinist / CAM Programmer
Role Type: Independent Contractor
Location: Remote (requires access to a CNC machine, see below)
Compensation: $100–$150 USD per hour, based on experience and project fit
Schedule: Flexible, project-based
About the Role
We are seeking experienced CNC Machinists / CAM Programmers who program and run their own parts to contribute to an AI training project focused on CNC manufacturing.
You'll be given CAD models and produce complete, production-ready machining work for each one: the CAM program, the posted NC code, and the machined part. Your work becomes a reference for what correct, safe, shop-ready CAM output looks like.
No prior AI experience is required. Your hands-on programming and machining experience is what matters.
Machine Access Required
You must have regular access to a CNC machine you can run: your own shop, a shop you work in where you're permitted to run outside projects, or a similar setup. Applicants without machine access will not be considered.
What You'll Do
- Receive part models (STEP) and drawings, and program them in your CAM software.
- Deliver the CAM file, posted NC programs, and a short setup note (machine, workholding, tooling, stock) for each part.
- Machine the parts and send photos, cycle times, and basic inspection results.
- Flag problems with the parts you're given (manufacturability, tolerances, missing features) and explain how you'd resolve them.
- Occasionally review other programs for accuracy, safety, and efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5 years of professional CAM programming or CNC machining experience.
- Access to a CNC mill (3-axis minimum; 4- or 5-axis strongly preferred) that you can run for project work.
- Strong hands-on experience with Autodesk Fusion 360 CAM.
- Solid command of machining strategy, tooling, workholding, simulation, post-processing, and G-code.
- Ability to take a part from model to finished part on your own.
- Clear written English.
Preferred Qualifications
- 4-axis and/or 5-axis programming and machining experience.
- Experience across a range of materials (aluminum, steels, stainless, plastics).
- Experience with additional CAM platforms or CNC controls.
- Experience reviewing or approving programs for production.
Engagement Details
- Fully remote independent-contractor engagement; machining is done at your own shop or machine.
- Flexible hours, with work completed according to project deadlines.
- Compensation of $100–$150 USD per hour, depending on experience and project fit.
- Project scope and volume may vary based on business needs and the quality of submitted work.
- Contractors are responsible for their own equipment, software access, and applicable taxes.
If you're an experienced programmer or machinist with your own machine access and want to help shape how AI handles real manufacturing work, we encourage you to apply.
