Job Description: MRI Technologist
Position Summary
Under general supervision, the MRI Technologist is responsible for safely performing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures. This role involves preparing patients, operating MRI equipment, selecting imaging protocols, and ensuring high-quality diagnostic images while maintaining strict safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Imaging
- Prepare and position patients for MRI examinations.
- Verify patient identity using Joint Commission (JC) guidelines (name, DOB, MRN, and ordered exam).
- Perform MRI scans according to established protocols for both clinical and research patients.
- Adjust imaging parameters as needed to maintain diagnostic image quality based on patient condition.
- Perform routine outpatient MRI exams with and without contrast.
MRI Operations & Technical Duties
- Set imaging parameters, acquire images, and perform post-processing.
- Display images upon request for clinical evaluation and research purposes.
- Select appropriate imaging protocols based on physician orders.
- Rotate across MRI scanners within the department as required.
Contrast Administration & Patient Monitoring
- Insert IV catheters when required.
- Prepare and administer MR contrast agents, including use of MR-compatible power injectors.
- Identify contraindications to contrast agents and communicate risks effectively.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions and respond appropriately.
- Accurately document all contrast-related information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Perform point-of-care testing (POCT) as applicable.
MRI Safety & Compliance
- Educate patients and visitors on MRI safety procedures.
- Ensure strict adherence to MRI safety policies.
- Act as the final safety checkpoint prior to imaging.
- Identify hazardous situations or equipment malfunctions and take corrective action.
- Secure the MRI area and evacuate patients/personnel in emergency situations.
Quality Assurance & Equipment Maintenance
- Perform scheduled quality assurance (QA) and quality control procedures on MRI systems.
- Record QA results and report equipment issues to supervisors promptly.
Teamwork & Coordination
- Collaborate with radiologists, nurses, child life specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in clinical care coordination.
- Assist with departmental tasks such as scheduling, patient transport, inventory management, and administrative duties.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of MRI procedures, protocols, and safety requirements.
- Ability to adapt imaging parameters to patient conditions.
- Proficient in IV insertion and contrast administration.
- Excellent patient care and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
*Offered pay rate will be based on education, experience, and healthcare credentials.
