Job Summary
The Medical Technologist is responsible for performing laboratory analyses on patient specimens to provide accurate and timely clinical information that supports diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention. This role ensures the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and safety while adhering to regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and specialized laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures and quality standards.
- Adhere to quality assurance guidelines, documenting corrective actions for any non-conforming events.
- Prepare reagents and maintain adequate inventory levels to minimize waste and control costs.
- Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment; escalate issues to appropriate technical support when needed.
- Exercise clinical judgment to prioritize workload, identify problems, and implement solutions.
- Assist with review, revision, and maintenance of laboratory procedures to ensure compliance with CAP, TJC, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies.
- Maintain clear, real-time communication across shifts and with leadership regarding issues impacting patient care or operations.
- Participate in staff meetings, competency assessments, projects, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain a safe work environment while handling biohazardous, chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards.
Education & Certification Requirements
- Associate or bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related field required
- MLT/MT registry eligible required
- MLT/MT (ASCP) or equivalent certification required within one year of hire
- Bachelor’s degree and ASCP certification preferred
Experience & Skills
- Clinical laboratory experience preferred
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Commitment to quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance
- Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment
