We are seeking a Controller who will take full ownership of the accounting function and help build the financial infrastructure required for scale.
Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial operations of the company and serves as the primary steward of ThermAir’s financial integrity. This is a hands-on leadership role that blends technical accounting expertise with operational insight.
The Controller will manage the month-end close, ensure GAAP-compliant financial reporting, maintain strong internal controls, and partner closely with ownership and operations to provide clear, actionable financial information. This role goes beyond transactional accounting — it is central to cost control, job profitability, cash flow management, and long-term financial planning.
Core Responsibilities
- Own the general ledger and lead timely, accurate month-end and year-end close processes
- Prepare and review complex journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial schedules
- Produce monthly financial statements, including P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow analysis
- Ensure GAAP compliance and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and documentation
- Oversee job costing, margin analysis, and work-in-progress tracking to support operational decision-making
- Monitor revenue recognition and ensure proper treatment of service contracts and projects
- Manage full-cycle accounts payable and receivable, including vendor oversight and collections
- Oversee payroll accounting, accruals, and proper labor allocation across jobs and departments
- Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets
- Prepare audit-ready financials and coordinate with external accountants, tax preparers, and auditors
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning in collaboration with ownership
- Analyze cost drivers, identify margin improvement opportunities, and recommend corrective actions
- Maintain fixed asset schedules, leases, and long-term obligations
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve reporting, and enhance financial systems
- Serve as the primary accounting and finance resource for internal stakeholders
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory or Controller-level responsibilities
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and practical application in an operating business
- Experience with job costing, service-based revenue, or construction / mechanical contracting preferred
- Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Oracle, or similar) and strong Excel skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage deadlines, prioritize competing demands, and maintain accuracy
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- High degree of integrity, discretion, and ownership mindset
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in HVAC, construction, or project-based service environments
- Exposure to inventory, equipment capitalization, and WIP accounting
- Prior involvement in budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow modeling
- Experience improving internal controls and scaling accounting processes
- Ability to communicate financial results clearly to non-financial leaders
- Experience coordinating with banks, lenders, and external advisors
