Position Summary:
The Patient Access Representative – Emergency Department provides essential front-line support in a fast-paced, high-acuity ER setting. This role is responsible for registering patients, verifying insurance, obtaining consents, and ensuring timely and accurate data entry at the point of entry. The role is critical to ensuring smooth patient flow, regulatory compliance, and a positive experience for patients and families during emergencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Register patients arriving in the Emergency Room promptly and accurately.
- Obtain and verify patient demographics, insurance coverage, and authorization forms.
- Collect co-pays or deposits as appropriate and issue patient consent documentation.
- Prioritize patients based on acuity and maintain calm professionalism in high-stress situations.
- Collaborate with clinical staff, triage nurses, and emergency providers to support urgent care needs.
- Ensure accurate data entry into the hospital’s registration and EHR systems in real-time.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and hospital policies.
- Answer phones, direct visitors, and assist with general clerical support in the ER.
- Communicate respectfully with patients, families, and staff, even in emotionally charged situations.
- Monitor the lobby or ER entrance to ensure all patients are acknowledged and processed efficiently.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Coursework in healthcare, billing, or medical office practices preferred.
Experience:
- At least one (1) year of experience in patient registration, admissions, or healthcare clerical support.
- Emergency Department or high-volume hospital registration experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong customer service and communication skills under pressure.
- Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and data entry systems.
- Basic knowledge of insurance verification and billing processes.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Comfort working in an environment with trauma, critical care, and emotional patients/families.
- Dependable, flexible, and punctual with a strong team orientation.
Work Schedule:
- Full-Time: 36 hours per week
- Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- May include day, evening, or night shifts depending on scheduling.
- 3x12s Shifts
